With its roots in India's early agrarian society, Diwali falls on the day of a new moon and coincides with the last harvest before winter, symbolizing new beginnings and the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. Bhangra originated as a genre of folk dance and music of Punjab, performed during the harvest season, and takes its name from bhang, or hemp, once an important agricultural product of that region.
