Musical Ecologies returns to the airwaves Thursday, November 19th for a live radio event featuring sound artist Ben Manley. The event will be broadcast live from the Old Stone House in Park Slope, Brooklyn on Wave Farm’s WGXC 90.7-FM Radio for Open Ears in New York’s Upper Hudson Valley, and online at wavefarm.org/listen and on the Wave Farm Radio App (iOS). Due to COVID-19 there will be no in-person audience attendance.

Based in New York City, Manley’s work explores the natural variability of wind, amplified small vibrations, and resonant objects to generate dynamic musical environments. He will present recent works built around his unique experimental field recording method that uses multiple microphones widely spaced in large, open, outdoor spaces. The resulting recordings bring to life various acoustic phenomena while immersing the listener in a rich sonic environment. The program will begin with a conversation hosted by series curator Dan Joseph.

Now it its extended seventh season, Musical Ecologies is a monthly symposium on music and sound held at the Old Stone House in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Curated and hosted by composer Dan Joseph, each event typically focuses on a single artist who presents a work or project either in the form of a talk or lecture, a multimedia presentation, a performance, or combination thereof. Each presentation is preceded by an extended conversation between the artist and curator.

About the artist:
Composer Ben Manley has worked extensively in non-commercial music and audio in New York City and has presented solo performances and installations across the country and overseas. He has collaborated with friends and colleagues, and has appeared with Composers Inside Electronics, Essential Music, and the Downtown Ensemble. As a curator, Manley has produced concerts of experimental music at Greenwich House Music School, Jack Tilton Gallery, and Brooklyn Music School, including House Mix: 19 Pianos, 19 Improvisers & 19 Microphones (a collective performance/recording/playback event), Electro-Whammy (w/ Ron Kuivila, Ben Manley, Matt Rogalsky), and say YES! to experimental music (w/ Jens Brand, Dan Evans Farkas, Ben Manley, Phill Niblock). As a concert sound engineer, he has worked thousands of events at venues including the Whitney Museum, Dia Art Foundation, Roulette, Jack Tilton Gallery, The Guggenheim, Symphony Space, DiMenna Center, and The Stone for artists as diverse as La Monte Young, Alvin Lucier, Sarah Weaver, Daniel Goode, Connie Crothers, Cecil Taylor, David Rosenboom, Takehisa Kosugi, and many others. New and developing interests include placing microphones at great distances from each other to collapse or re-broadcast outdoor sound. In performance, Manley plays back these recordings with occasional live composed audio processing.
