In this broadcast, an exploration of the career of guitarist Sonny Sharrock, from his work as a sideman in the 1960s with visionaries such as Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Mann and Pharoah Sanders to his groundbreaking work as a leader playing alongside Ronald Shannon Jackson, Nicky Skopelitis and Bill Laswell, among others, until his untimely death at age 53 in 1994. Overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational music and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experimental music——familiar to rare, classic to weird. Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation and was involved with the arts while living in Brooklyn for 25 years, serving on the advisory boards for Celebrate Brooklyn and Symphony Space. He curated the Brooklyn Museum’s summer jazz series and helped found The Mingus Big Band.
