The music of composer/saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist/educator and revolutionary musical innovator Anthony Braxton. We’ll hear his his Falling River Music (2003, 2008), reworked for an ensemble of nine reading off of the composer’s evocative graphic scores with numerical and alphabetical equations, abstract diagrams, conventional notation, and painted gestures. The stellar ensemble is: Braxton, James Fei, Ingrid Laubrock, Jasmine Lovell-Smith, saxophones; Mary Halvorson, Brandon Seabrook, guitars; Tomeka Reid, cello; Nate Wooley, trumpet; Taylor Ho Bynum, cornet. Then we’ll play an excerpt of Composition No. 146 “Moogie and Stetson” (1988) for 12 flutes, two tubas, and percussion. The recipient of every imaginable award including a MacArthur Fellowship, the composer turns 80 in June 2025. These performances were recorded at the Roulette Concert Hall in Brooklyn in 2014.
