I found Idris Muhammad's Power of Soul record when I was 19 at A1 records. I was gonna see him play (with a Brecker brother I think) that night at the Blue Note. As I raced up the street to meet my friend, Idris pulled up in the cab in a fresh scarf, and saw me jogging down the block carrying this record. He flipped.
Between sets I went and talked to the great drummer. He said this was his favorite record he ever made. A man had written him a letter about it, an ex-con, and said that Power of Soul "got him through the joint." That meant everything to Mr. Muhammad.
I didn't appreciate the full depth of that then. But now as we're all once again trapped in one joint or another, I think it's time for some funky jazz to get you through it.
