John Cage performed "How to Get Started" (1989) just once – at the Bay Area Radio Drama Conference at Skywalker Ranch in Nicasio, California – explaining to his audience what he was going to do just moments before he began. This was a collaborative improvisation with two sound engineers: an extemporization on 10 discrete ideas, with each new topic presented against an ever more dense audio playback of the extemporizations that had come before. The plot literally thickens. Cage’s experiment in improvisatory thinking in public revealed concerns about art and artists, performance, intentions, dreams, and chance. The performances will in the László Z. Bitó '60 Conservatory Building. WGXC will broadcast this event from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
