Local Waves at The Local is a free series at The Local curated by Mike Amari/Chosen Family in partnership with Wave Farm's WGXC featuring Hudson Valley artists performing original music.

$500 (Five Hundred Dollars) hails from Kingston, NY. Ian Donohue (guitar), Kaitlyn Flanagan (bass, vocals), and Lilly Griffin (drums) pursue the groove that rock bands have encountered from the beginning. They do so with a singular honesty - classic in tone, with a bespoke intensity. The product is a brand of rock and roll that is at the same time animating and reassured. Their full-length debut, “Twelve Eyes,” is cleared from the dense forest of rock’s tradition to build a bonfire for its listeners to gather in awed witness of the mundane elegance and ecstatic pain of an analog life in a digital century.

New Orthodox is "New American" music, not in sound but in participation. Led by New York based multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Merz, he invites collaborators within and beyond state lines such as Freak Heat Waves, Thor Harris, and Spencer Krug, to bring the work to life. Through a patchwork of disparate musical styles that borders on performance art, the project is focused on highlighting the human element of error, and creating as little distraction as possible around it. The band's ethos leans heavily into minimalist repetition, sonic experimentation, and lyrical insights that give way to live performances and recordings that utilize space and silence to imitate the human experience. The music is both intimate and grand, charged and claustrophobic, taking the tools of country and spinning them out of context.

When all the music ever created is a swipe away on your phone, it's easy to miss the incredible original artists who are making and releasing music right here in the Hudson Valley. This series will serve as an expansion of the Local Waves radio show I co-created with WGXC (which plays all new, local music every Friday 8pm) to further highlight these acts with a free, monthly concert in a fantastic venue at The Local. I hope that folks will use this series as a way of discovering new artists, and getting to know their neighbors in the process." - Mike Amari
