In the wake of recent disasters that have struck Japan, TSL will be holding a fund-raising screening of Yasujiro Ozu's classic masterpiece "Tokyo Story." Japanese snacks and a variety of special Japanese teas (courtesy of Verdigris) will be available for purchase before the screening. Kendall Heitzman, PhD candidate at Yale and visiting instructor of Japanese at Bard College, who recently translated a text on Ozu, will be present for an introduction before the film. "Tokyo Story" (1953) follows an aging couple on a journey from their rural village to visit their two married children in bustling, postwar Tokyo. From a simple tale unfolds one of the greatest of all Japanese films, which reprises one of Ozu's favorite themes of generational conflict.
