Originally from Seattle, Washington, Rajnii has been engaging diverse community audiences for over 30 years as a Spoken Word Poet/Emcee and Teaching Artist. No registration required.

Community Conversations is an opportunity to join local experts and community members virtually. This program series addresses important issues, from affordable farmland to Indigenous land stewardship and their connection to conservation. One-hour Zoom sessions will include brief presentations, time for questions and answers, and the opportunity to connect with others.

This month, we will explore how libraries and conservation efforts support each other!

Mandy Babirad, Assistant Director and Children’s Librarian at the Kinderhook Memorial Library, will be joined by Jenifer Rosete, Conservation Education Coordinator at CLC, to discuss collaborative efforts to get people of all ages outdoors. Babirad will highlight upcoming and past nature-themed activities at the library, like this past summer reading program that encouraged young visitors to visit all ten CLC properties. Rosete will then share ways to explore nature with your local library using CLC resources like Nature Explorer Backpacks and Nature Quest!

These casual monthly in-person meet-ups at the Hudson Area Library will provide you with an opportunity to practice speaking conversational Spanish, facilitated by our instructor Sonia Cintron. All skill levels are welcome!

Julia Bacha’s documentary film "Boycott" (2021) traces the impact of state legislation which penalizes individuals and companies that boycott Israel in response to its illegal occupation of Palestine and decades-long abuse of Palestinian human rights. A news publisher in Arkansas, an attorney in Arizona, and a speech therapist in Texas each launch courageous legal battles in opposition to their state’s anti-BDS (Boycott, Divest, and Sanction) laws and in defense of the First Amendment.

A group exhibition of over 70 women artists now on view in CREATE’s 1st & 2nd floor gallery in celebration of women’s history month. On Saturday, Feb. 22 from 2-4pm, several featured artists will discuss their work in the show during this Artist's Talk!

In his over 40 year career, guitarist Marc Ribot has created iconic music with the likes of Tom Waits, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Elvis Costello, and many more. For his Hudson Hall debut, Ribot reunites with drummer Chad Taylor to continue the Albert Ayler-tinged trajectory they begun in the early aughts with their band Spiritual Unity and then the Grimes Taylor Ribot Trio, this time with the added talents of former Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg and the fearless guitarist/improvisator Ava Mendoza (Unnatural Ways, The Violent Femmes, tUnE-yArDs).

Quatuor Van Kuijk and harpist Parker Ramsay visit PS21 with a program of impressionistic works by French composers Debussy, Fauré, and Caplet paired with Nico Muhly and Alice Goodman’s The Street, a set of meditations commissioned by Ramsay for solo harp. Representatives of the next generation of classical musicians, the internationally celebrated French string quartet and American harpist bring their sense of discovery to classic works of the belle époque and to the music of today.

To celebrate the launch of a new website dedicated to the Black Legacy Association of Columbia County (BLACC) collection of oral histories, the Hudson Area Library will host a virtual panel discussion of the collection with Quintin Cross (Hudson/Catskill Housing Coalition) and Tiffany Garriga (Black Entrepreneur Market). The BLACC collection is an archive of local oral histories, videos, images, and documents from the 1980s, donated to the library by Columbia Opportunities, Inc. in 2018. They are now organized, digitized, archived, and made accessible on a brand new website.

February 6, 2025: Basic Audio Concepts 

Session objectives include an overview of common and useful terms related to acoustic, electronic, and digital ecologies, with a technical focus on audio transduction and microphone varieties. Additional topics for discussion include psychoacoustics—the branch of science studying the psychological responses associated with sound—with a focus on physical spatial considerations and panning/width in recording.

March 6, 2025: Filters

Session objectives include an introduction to common concepts related to filters in audio production, including frequency response, polar pattern, and equalization. Participants will also learn about The Fletcher Munson Curve, frequency masking, and infrasound, and how to apply these concepts to your work. We will also consider recording height and how to address unwanted plosives and sibilance.

April 3, 2025: Considering Loudness when Recording

Session objectives include strategies for achieving desired “depth” in your recordings. Topics include gain staging, dynamic range, compression, and the concept of distance in recording, including reverb and distortion.

May 1, 2025: Editing Bootcamp

Editing bootcamp! We will cover hotkeys, fades, matching takes, punching in/out, layering tracks, and bus processing. Participants will learn shortcuts for quicker and better edits, as well as bulk import/export strategies.

June 5, 2025: Creative processing

Session objectives include strategies for creating your own audio effects (FX). Topics include delays, filters, autopan, and time stretching. Participants will learn about sequences FX and FX automation in order to achieve the sounds you are imagining.

July 3, 2025: Multitrack Mixing

Session objectives include strategies for mixing multitrack sessions for full height, width, and depth without murkiness. The goal of this session is to understand how to make multiple tracks fit together in a mix. Attendees will participate in critical listening for frequency range, dynamics, and headroom.

August 7, 2025: The Physical Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include an overview of crucial care and maintenance of recording equipment to ensure longevity of your tools, including a hands-on introduction to soldering and light electronic repairs.

September 4, 2025: The Intangible Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include discussions about analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and digital audio processing. Specific topics will include block size, sample rate, bit depth, compression, streaming, and physical media. Additional topics include how best to manage computer resources in large sessions, latency for high track count, and CPU intensive processing.

October 2, 2025: Understanding Monitoring Sources and Taking it to the Stage

Session objectives include a conceptual overview of possible monitoring sources: speakers, headphones, and subwoofers, as well as the impacts of the space or room on your recording quality. Additional topics will include techniques for recording live performance, including ringing out microphones, PA system safety, microphone techniques, and streaming.

November 6, 2025: Taking It to the Field

Session objectives include field recording tools, principles, refinement, and processing.

Jen Kutler is a multidisciplinary artist and Technical Director of Wave Farm. Kutler modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments. Susan Eley Fine Art presents "dismantle" at its Upstate location in Hudson, NY. Organized by Liz Lorenz, Assistant Director of SEFA—the exhibition includes four artists: Ana Maria Farina, Susan Lisbin, Maria Manhattan, and Marianne van Lent. Their works range from sculpture, to painting, to textile. The featured artists are currently living and working around the Upstate New York region.

"dismantle" is on view from March 6-April 27, 2025. Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, March 8th from 4-6PM. Many of the artists will be present with us to discuss their works at the event which coincides with International Women’s Day!

The exhibition was conceived by curator Liz Lorenz’s belief in the power of dismantling to rebuild. In the featured artworks, the techniques of dissecting, highlighting and redefining reveal the struggles, potentials and powers of the corporeal realm. This concept is especially pertinent in relation to the female body at this time. Thus, SEFA is honored to present the work of four artists who zoom in to and abstract our physical realities—cherishing their multifaceted natures while fostering aesthetic experiences.

Ana Maria Farina’s textile works from her “histérica” series attempt to uncover what lies beneath, using her medium to “paint with a gun” and redefine the term hysteria that has been weaponized against certain groups. Susan Lisbin’s ceramic “Lips” hang on the walls in dynamic conversations, simultaneously isolating a single body part and illustrating the energetic conversations we can have together. Maria Manhattan’s porcelain busts are adorned with crowns of China shards and others pierced with arrows, evoking both honor and suffering. Marianne van Lent’s mixed media paintings from her “Biological Anthropology” series meld cellular forms, organic shapes and ancient mythology to craft abstracted stories about complexities of our contemporary bodies.

Dr. Tara Rodgers (Analog Tara) is a multi-instrumentalist composer, sound engineer, and historian of electronic music. She is the author of Pink Noises: Women on Electronic Music and Sound (2010) and numerous essays on the history of sound and synthesizers.

Premiere performance of “life of the mother,” a new ambient electronic music album imagining the depth, expansiveness, complexity, and power that this phrase holds. From the sounds of a vintage ARP 2500 and modern noise synths run through a DJ mixer, to algorithmic percolations of analog synths, the music blends emergent systems, improvisation, and intention into a complex and dynamic whole. The fourth annual sourdough bread-baking competition at Dewey Hall on Friday, March 14th! Local home bakers will showcase their skills, offering a fun culinary experience for all. Sourdough bread, dating back 14,000 years, is made with a traditional starter, making a comeback in home baking. Bakers will submit two full loaves: one for tasting and one for raffle. Attendees can sample the loaves and enjoy cheese boards, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks. Raffle tickets (cash only) will offer chances to win loaves and other prizes. Judges include experts from Bizalion's Fine Foods, Berkshire Mountain Bakery, and Found Bread, while live music by the Michael Junkins Duo adds to the atmosphere. This event, supported by local businesses, is organized by Evelyn Battaglia and Sherri Gorelick. All proceeds benefit Dewey Hall, a historic venue founded in 1887 by The Sheffield Friendly Union.

Multi-instrumentalist composer and electronic music historian Tara Rodgers produces a retrospective concert of selected works from the past 20 years, diffused in an immersive 4.1 sound system.

This event requires everyone to wear a mask in the venue.⁣ Masks will be available on entry.⁣

Rodgers’s research and music explore electronic sound as material and metaphor, with studio practice as a hands-on parallel to study of the long history of electronic music and sound.

The concert juxtaposes her wide-ranging work across styles and methods, from generative computer music written in SuperCollider, to electroacoustic compositions featuring piano improvisation, to pulsing ambient and techno tracks.

As a historian and multidisciplinary scholar, Rodgers has also published essays in foundational volumes in contemporary studies of music, sound, technology, and culture. Her book Pink Noises: Women on Electronic Music and Sound (Duke University Press, 2010) brings together twenty-four interviews with women in electronic music and sound cultures who expand notions of who and what counts in matters of invention, production, and noise-making.

After the concert, Rodgers is joined by Rensselaer Arts graduate student and renowned DJ Rekha Malhotra, along with Director of the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Stephanie Loveless for an onstage conversation and Q&A.

CLC and the Chatham Public Library are teaming up for a monthly walking club on public lands! Together, we will enjoy fresh air, friends, and fun as we explore the trails at High Falls this month.

What to expect: We will walk one mile along the Waterfall Way trail, which features a forested path with packed earth, bog bridges, exposed roots, and a maximum grade of 15%. There are seating opportunities alongside the trail; more details can be found here. Please note that this event will still occur in light rain or snow, but registrants will be contacted in extreme weather.

When his musical YANK! was successfully produced down in Rio de Janeiro, David Zellnik found himself part of a passionate community of theatre makers including George, the show’s vibrant 26-year-old producer. Two years later, George was dead – of a mysterious “sudden bacterial infection”. David returns to Brazil for his memorial, but the more he digs into George’s personal life, the more he’s forced to wrestle with his own feelings and fears and the real source of his desire to understand George’s life and death. Columbia and Greene Counties – Spring Gardening Day will take place on two Saturdays in March! March 22 at the Extension Education Center in Hudson and March 29 at the Agroforestry Resource Center in Acra. Each day will feature four educational workshops led by knowledgeable Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs). They will cover a variety of gardening topics designed to inspire and inform. Participants will also enjoy a light breakfast and the opportunity to shop at the Master Gardeners Marketplace. The marketplace will offer gently used books, gardening tools, and plant cuttings.

“Spring Gardening Day is all about fostering a love of gardening and building a stronger connection to the natural world,” said Xandra Powers, Community Horticulture Coordinator. “Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this event offers something for everyone, from expert-led workshops to unique finds at the marketplace.”

Guest speakers will be Riham Barghouti, a founding member of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), and a longtime organizer for Palestinian rights in NYC; and Rebecca Vilkomerson, the Executive Director of the national organization Jewish Voice for Peace from 2009 - 2019, and co-author of the new book, "Solidarity Is the Political Version of Love." Barghouti and Vilkomerson will share information about the origins, principles, and strategy of the BDS movement, as well as practical examples of effective BDS campaigns. Local organizers will discuss the Break the Bonds New York State (BTBNYS) campaign. Discussion will follow.

Chronogram Conversations: The State of Cannabis in New York is an evening of discussion and networking on March 26 at the Fuller Building in Kingston. This panel discussion—part of our Chronogram Conversations series—will bring together dispensary owners, cannabis farmers, and industry experts to explore the victories, setbacks, and future of legal cannabis in the state.

New Zealand-born pop artist Kimbra is a songwriter, musician, producer, and performer currently based in NYC. In 2011, she debuted her first album, "Vows, Bowed" as well as a duet with Gotye on the song "Somebody I Used To Know". She released her most recent album, "Primal Heart", last year.

Born in Santa Cruz, California, into a family of artists, Kendra McKinley has been immersed in a spectrum of performance mediums from a young age. Her most recent LP, "WHERE DOES A BODY BEGIN?", released in 2023 and her upcoming EP "music for smoking weed with your bra off" is entirely performed and produced by McKinley. She is currently based in New York's Hudson Valley

If you work in a creative field and struggle with the bookkeeping side of your practice, this workshop is for you. Artist and self-employed bookkeeper Amanda C. Mathis will guide you through basic bookkeeping procedures that will help you keep your business finances organized so you’ll feel ready when it’s time to file your taxes. We’ll review various systems for tracking financials, how to use a chart of accounts, what types of expenses are deductible and how they should be categorized, as well as other helpful bookkeeping tips. Columbia and Greene Counties – Spring Gardening Day will take place on two Saturdays in March! March 22 at the Extension Education Center in Hudson and March 29 at the Agroforestry Resource Center in Acra. Each day will feature four educational workshops led by knowledgeable Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs). They will cover a variety of gardening topics designed to inspire and inform. Participants will also enjoy a light breakfast and the opportunity to shop at the Master Gardeners Marketplace. The marketplace will offer gently used books, gardening tools, and plant cuttings.

“Spring Gardening Day is all about fostering a love of gardening and building a stronger connection to the natural world,” said Xandra Powers, Community Horticulture Coordinator. “Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this event offers something for everyone, from expert-led workshops to unique finds at the marketplace.”

This year’s workshops include an engaging mixture of topics:

From Seed to Vase– Learn the art of planning and growing of flowers to create bouquets.
Invasives– Learn to identify and manage invasive pests to protect your garden.
Bees and Beyond – A Master Beekeeper and MGV will share fascinating insights into the world of bees and their vital role in our gardens.
Gardening for Nocturnal Pollinators – Learn to design a garden that supports and attracts night-flying pollinators like moths and bats.
Gardening Tips– A treasure trove of tried-and-true gardening tips and tricks from experienced Master Gardeners.
Landscaping with Native Plants for Pollinators – Explore the benefits of native plants and create pollinator-friendly landscapes.
Tool Care 101 – Learn how to maintain and care for your gardening tools.
Designing and Planting a Wildflower Meadow– Get practical tips on creating a thriving wildflower meadow.

Additionally, on March 29 only, attendees can participate in a hands-on workshop: Build Your Own Worm Bin!

In addition to workshops and shopping, attendees can look forward to door prizes and the chance to meet other gardening enthusiasts in the community.

Random Harvest Market in Craryville, NY and Columbia County for Palestine are proud to co-sponsor a solo exhibition by Berkshires photographer Daniel Karp. All proceeds from sales will be donated to families in Gaza.

In the upstairs community space - an opening reception featuring Pesto for Palestine pizzas (vegan and GF options available) and music by DJ Jeff Economy of WGXC's Snackpoint Charlie! Daniel Karp will be on hand to discuss his work. Flyers with QR codes will link to the families in Gaza who will directly benefit from donations.

Daniel has been involved in art and image making for most of his adult life, studying both film and photography at New York University. Working with both film and digital cameras and utilizing various photographic processes from collodion wet plate to digital negatives he has embraced all that photography has to offer. In addition to being a photographer Daniel has been an active musician, playing guitar and writing songs with Hack Monet, Bell Engine and other local bands. He also works as a location sound recordist for film and television productions. Daniel has made his home in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts since 1992.

February 6, 2025: Basic Audio Concepts 

Session objectives include an overview of common and useful terms related to acoustic, electronic, and digital ecologies, with a technical focus on audio transduction and microphone varieties. Additional topics for discussion include psychoacoustics—the branch of science studying the psychological responses associated with sound—with a focus on physical spatial considerations and panning/width in recording.

March 6, 2025: Filters

Session objectives include an introduction to common concepts related to filters in audio production, including frequency response, polar pattern, and equalization. Participants will also learn about The Fletcher Munson Curve, frequency masking, and infrasound, and how to apply these concepts to your work. We will also consider recording height and how to address unwanted plosives and sibilance.

April 3, 2025: Considering Loudness when Recording

Session objectives include strategies for achieving desired “depth” in your recordings. Topics include gain staging, dynamic range, compression, and the concept of distance in recording, including reverb and distortion.

May 1, 2025: Editing Bootcamp

Editing bootcamp! We will cover hotkeys, fades, matching takes, punching in/out, layering tracks, and bus processing. Participants will learn shortcuts for quicker and better edits, as well as bulk import/export strategies.

June 5, 2025: Creative processing

Session objectives include strategies for creating your own audio effects (FX). Topics include delays, filters, autopan, and time stretching. Participants will learn about sequences FX and FX automation in order to achieve the sounds you are imagining.

July 3, 2025: Multitrack Mixing

Session objectives include strategies for mixing multitrack sessions for full height, width, and depth without murkiness. The goal of this session is to understand how to make multiple tracks fit together in a mix. Attendees will participate in critical listening for frequency range, dynamics, and headroom.

August 7, 2025: The Physical Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include an overview of crucial care and maintenance of recording equipment to ensure longevity of your tools, including a hands-on introduction to soldering and light electronic repairs.

September 4, 2025: The Intangible Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include discussions about analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and digital audio processing. Specific topics will include block size, sample rate, bit depth, compression, streaming, and physical media. Additional topics include how best to manage computer resources in large sessions, latency for high track count, and CPU intensive processing.

October 2, 2025: Understanding Monitoring Sources and Taking it to the Stage

Session objectives include a conceptual overview of possible monitoring sources: speakers, headphones, and subwoofers, as well as the impacts of the space or room on your recording quality. Additional topics will include techniques for recording live performance, including ringing out microphones, PA system safety, microphone techniques, and streaming.

November 6, 2025: Taking It to the Field

Session objectives include field recording tools, principles, refinement, and processing.

Jen Kutler is a multidisciplinary artist and Technical Director of Wave Farm. Kutler modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments. This exploration walk is perfect for nature lovers of all ages! We will learn about woodland pools and the animals who call these places home. These woodland pools, also called vernal pools, are seasonal pools of water that provide habitat for distinctive plants and animals, like spring peepers, wood frogs, and salamanders. This time of year is ideal for spotting amphibians as they migrate from their wintering spots and journey to vernal pools to find mates. What’s involved: We will travel about a mile along the Salamander Loop, which features packed earth terrain. This event may include walking off-trail over uneven, wet, and muddy terrain to get closer to woodland pools. More information about trail conditions can be found at the link below. Jaago Hudson is thrilled to announce the launch of our Survivor Support Guide for South Asians and their loved ones! This illustrated, multilingual resource was created by South Asian survivors for South Asian survivors to help navigate cultural barriers and stigmas around sexual abuse. It challenges the social norms that enable victim-blaming and rape culture, offering guidance and support to survivors and their communities. The Hudson launch is a public event where we will distribute free printed copies of the guidebook—available in 11 languages—for all attendees. There will also be food and space to connect with community members. You are welcome to share this event with your friends, family, and loved ones. We can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with you!

Bradford Reed and Ryder Cooley combine strings, reeds, keys, bows and steel to create plateaus of sound, intertwined with pizzicato ostinatos and improvisatory elements as the musicians respond to the energy of the room.

The electro-acoustic duet blends the sounds of bowed saw with harmonic overtones of pencilina, a zither-like instrument designed by Bradford. The music segues into traditional reedy melodies and drones on the accordion, then back again to the whispery moans of the saw interspersed with rhythmic pulses on the pencilina. Traversing a broad sonic palette, Grains of Euphora can be categorized as simultaneously symphonious and rambunctious.

The Melting Pot, a secular series by FPC Hudson, brings together musical talent and culinary artisans, pairing homemade soup with stellar live music.

Greene County is a critical battlefield for the fight for public power. We'll share how you can get plugged into organizing with your neighbors, who we need to win support from, and how we can pass a local resolution in support of the bill in multiple localities! Hear from Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha on how we can seize our power back from Central Hudson. The Hudson Valley Power Authority Act (Shrestha/Hinchey) would replace Central Hudson with a publicly-owned utility that delivers energy without a profit motive, and is accountable to the public.
