This fall, our women’s walking group with wellness coach Angelica Rogers will meet at the Hudson Area Library at 9:30am. Together we will walk a generous loop around the city, getting to know one another, exchanging stories and gaining friendship in the community. As we circle back to our beginning point, we’ll stop by the farmer’s market where you’ll be able to pick up fresh produce, swap recipe ideas, and feel inspired for your week ahead. Welcome to the ethereal realms and other-worldy sounds of "Seeds Under Nuclear Winter: An Earth Opera - SANCTUARY EDITION." An uplifting and ethereal immersive theater experience where spiritual visions and dreams come alive through live world and sacred music, performance art, and light experiments. Offered for ONE NIGHT ONLY at the Old Dutch Church / aka "The Cathedral of Kingston," this performance is an adaptation specially created for the Sanctuary of the church.

"Seeds Under Nuclear Winter: An Earth Opera" is a recreation of spiritual visions, dreams, and stories through world and sacred music, performance art, movement, and light experiments, shared within an immersive and multi-sensory community experience. The Earth Opera takes place in a post-apocalyptic atmosphere, and centers around rebirth, finding light and beauty in the darkest times, and the deep interconnection between all living things, our planet, and with each other. A vivid experimental theater piece orchestrated for harp, ethereal choral voices, South American/Andean instruments, chamber strings, droning harmoniums, dulcimer, bells, piano, horns, bagpipes, water phone, euphone, gongs, ancient Celtic horns, brass, and choir, the 'Earth Opera’ steps into otherworldly realms and unfolds upon a non-linear and timeless path, similar to the way we dream.

Every Monday at 7:30 p.m. No previous singing experience is required. For most of us, our voice is our most important medium of expression. With this voice we can sing, we can praise, we can express joy or pain, and we can teach. But often, our relationship with our voice becomes disconnected. We underestimate the effect our voice has on our bodies and our lives. This workshop is a doorway into reconnecting with your voice and expressing yourself more fully. Through a series of simple tones, or notes sung for long periods, we gently begin to observe the relationships between the voice, the body, the breath, and the self. This workshop is not affiliated with any spiritual practice. All people are welcome, and no singing experience is required. There is a short introduction and instruction, followed by 30 minutes of a guided toning series, and open discussion afterward (optional). Open to the public, but donations are graciously accepted. What happens when you plan an 1824 equivalent of a ticker-tape parade for a famous war hero but neighboring communities have similar plans on the same day? Library Trustees Joseph Ferris and Gary Sheffer explore Revolutionary War hero General Marquis de Lafayette’s 1824 visit to Hudson during his triumphant tour of America. They will further discuss the Frenchman’s frenzied time in Hudson, including how it was tied to local and national politics, including an allegedly “stolen” presidential election.

All are invited to roll down the Harlem Valley Rail Trail with CLC President Troy Weldy! During this guided biking program, participants will enjoy a moderate late-fall group ride through Columbia County.

What to expect: We will bike fifteen miles along the Harlem Valley Rail Trail over paved, flat terrain with stops to discuss wildlife and plants seen along the trail.

What to bring: Your own bike, safety equipment (helmet), additional layers, and water. Participants are encouraged to wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear.

We’ve hidden wintry items all over the Hudson Area Library! If you find them all, you will receive a small treat and a chance to win the Grand Prize (a colorful basket stuffed full of goodies and books). You can pick up a checklist and begin looking for clues! All ages are welcome to play.

The scavenger hunt run from December 2 – January 27, during library open hours. The Grand Prize winner will be announced on January 28.

The Huyck Preserve hosts a day of sweet treats and warm drinks, while perusing holiday and non-holiday themed cards. Proceeds from these cards supports the Preserve.

Monarda Community Care offers a free drop-in care clinic at the Hudson Area Library, which will include ear acupuncture, ear seeds, acupressure, a wide variety of free herbal medicines, Narcan, Fentanyl test strips, zines, and more. Participants who arrive by 1:30pm may receive acupuncture treatment. First come, first served. All are welcome!

This year, Hudson Hall is excited to hand over the reindeer reins to The Foundry at Hudson and The City of Hudson to produce the city-wide event, but we are thrilled to be participating as a Winter Walk venue with a sleigh-full of art and entertainment for the whole family.

Wave Farm in Partnership with The Avalon Lounge

Wave Farm is pleased to announce a unique opportunity, in partnership with the Catskill, NY performance venue The Avalon Lounge, for 2025. Two individuals will be selected from an open call for a 40-week Mentorship Program (February - November 2025). Mentees will learn the ins-and-outs of presenting independent and experimental performance in a community setting. Each mentee will receive a stipend of $5,000 in conjunction with the program. They will work closely with mentors Liam Singer (The Avalon Lounge, Wave Farm) and Ben Seratan (Basilica Hudson, The Avalon Lounge) on a weekly-basis to develop skills in sound engineering and event management, including artist relations, curation, booking, promotion, streaming for radio broadcast, and documentation. Mentees will also participate in Wave Farm’s “All Things Audio” a monthly workshop series, designed to help attendees develop sound skills to share their stories through best practices for recording, editing, and live radio.

• Notification: Mid to late January
• Stipend: Mentees receive a $5,000 stipend. Note that participants will receive a 1099-NEC
• Time Commitment: Mentees will be expected to commit approximately five hours a week for 40 weeks, February through November 2025. Please note: This is an in-person engagement. Applicants should be prepared to be physically in Catskill, NY one to two days a week, February - November 2025.
• Education: Additionally, mentees will be automatically enrolled in Wave Farm’s monthly workshops series “All Things Audio,” taking place the first Thursday of each month, 6 - 8 p.m., in-person at the WGXC Catskill Studio, February - November 2025.

Selection panel will use the following criteria in their review:

• Candidate is excited about working with the community.

The Claverack Free Library invites patrons, donors, neighbors and friends to celebrate its fifth anniversary in its new building on Sunday December 15, 2024 from 3 to 5 p.m. The event will feature music, refreshments…and of course, birthday cake.

Opened debt-free in October, 2019, the library made its new home in the completely renovated former-AB Shaw firehouse at the corner of State Routes 9H and 23B. The decades-long effort to expand the original 1,400 square foot library, which now temporarily houses the operations of the Claverack town board and town court, resulted in the creation of a new modern, light-filled facility that more than quadruples the size of the library.

Dr. Paul Spector is certified as a trainer with the American Academy of Sports Medicine. In this class at the Hudson Area Library, he shares exercises that improve postural stability, core strength, spatial body awareness, sensory integration, agility, and coordination. The class will serve as an important space for community through its focus on healthy connection, breathing, and its encouraging atmosphere.

The Sylvia Center presents a six-week virtual cooking program geared towards families with children ages 18 and younger. During each hour-long class, a Chef Educator guides participants through a seasonal vegetarian recipe. Each family can opt in to pick up weekly free fresh food meal kits that feed 4-6 and include all ingredients needed, save for salt and pepper. Curriculum emphasizes the role of nutrition in good health and focuses on building participants’ skills, confidence, and food knowledge inside and outside of the kitchen.

CREATE in Catskill will host a Winter Solstice celebration on Saturday, December 21st from 5 pm to 8 pm, with the gallery open from 11am to 8pm. We'll be hosting crafts for kids w/ Cultivate Catskill, "Make your own Swag" with Triona Fritsch, and KA Laity will be doing mini tarot readings.
