After the local news at noon, a celebration of composer/musician/philosopher Ornette Coleman, five days after what would have been his 93rd birthday. This live broadcast from Overlook Mountain will feature 20 Coleman compositions - many from his earliest albums - played by other musicians in a variety of settings, styles, tempi and dynamics, that showcase Ornette’s talents as one of jazz’s greatest melodic tunesmiths and composers. We’ll hear interpretations of Ornette’s compositions from musicians who played with him as well as from those who did not. In this second installment of Ornette Through Others’ Ears, many of the musicians are from Europe, not the U.S.

Special thanks to Max Crandall for his many recommendations for this show.

While living in Brooklyn for 25 years, he served on advisory boards for Celebrate Brooklyn and Symphony Space. He also curated the Brooklyn Museum’s summer jazz series and helped found The Mingus Big Band.
