Music from around the world is featured. Bringing the audience into the realm of other cultures through music, hopefully expanding empathy for the “other,” and recognizing that “other” in ourselves. From WGDR, Goddard College Plainfield, VT. wgdr.org/. Qawwali is a form of devotional music sung at the shrines and tombs of Sufi Saints, particularly in Pakistan, but elsewhere as well, since the music was popularized in the West through such groups as The Sabri Brothers and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Qawwal. Today we present three groups in performance, two from Pakistan: Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad Qawwal and Rizwan Muazzam, the nephews of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. We also feature a Qawwali group from North America (Canada & U.S.): Fanna-Fi-Allah whose tabla player, Aminah Chisti (Jessica Ripper), is the first female tabla player initiated into the lineage of Qawwali.
