This week on Reclaimed, we’re listening to songs of perseverance and resistance that channel the power of the Ghost Dance. An Indigenous revolution from over a century ago, the Ghost Dance Movement arose as a response to the devastating impacts of colonization on traditional ways of life in the United States. Starting in Western America, it moved throughout The Great Plains… and eventually to many tribes across Turtle Island. Native people refused to accept the erasure of their cultural practices. Get ready for contemporary artists continuing the legacy of resistance to protect and celebrate their culture. It's all about exploring the depths of the ancestral spirit - by listening to artists who hear a call from beyond, and express it through the vibrations of music. Reclaimed, the Indigenous Next Wave!

"RECLAIMED" is a weekly series on CBC Music that explores the many worlds of contemporary Indigenous music. From traditional songs and acoustic sounds to Native hip-hop, R&B, and the dancefloor-filling beats of electric powwow, "RECLAIMED" is a one hour soundtrack to the Indigenous Next Wave: a new generation of Indigenous artists reclaiming their culture through music and song.

Equal parts celebration, resistance, and reclamation, "RECLAIMED" introduces listeners to a new generation of Indigenous artists, while paying respect to First Nations musicians of previous generations that have set the stage for today’s emerging talent to rise. The series is a platform for musical discovery and education, incorporating everything from powwow songs and protest music, to electronic beats and incendiary political hip-hop. Over 100 compelling episodes, "RECLAIMED" interweaves Indigenous music with live performances, artist interviews and profiles, and songs in Indigenous languages. From Buffy Sainte-Marie and Robbie Robertson to Tanya Tagaq, A Tribe Called Red, and beyond, Cree/Dene host Jarrett Martineau is your guide to the Indigenous Next Wave.

"RECLAIMED" is produced for CBC Music and airs on WGXC through Native Voice One. Native Voice One (NV1) is the distribution division of Anchorage-based Koahnic Broadcast Corporation. Our mission is to serve as a leader in bringing Native voices to Alaska, the nation, and the world. NV1 distributes work from Native and non-Native producers whose programming educates, advocates, and celebrates Indigenous life and values. The programs also enlighten and inform the general public about Native American news, culture, history, music, events, and modern life. NV1 programming is entertaining, thought- provoking, timely, culturally-sensitive, and respectful.
