Bang on a Can Marathon

Jun 04, 2006: 11am- 10pm
World Financial Center - Winter Garden atrium

On June 4 we will be presenting the Bang on a Can Marathon, more than 10 hours of non-stop ear-stretching mind-bending music in downtown Manhattan at the World Financial Center. The Marathon features an eclectic super-mix of styles from the bizarre to the surreal, including the punk throat singing of Yat Kha (from Mongolia!), the ambient Icelandic quartet Amiina, and Milan's Sentieri Selvaggi in their first US performance. We start at 11:30 a.m. with an open air triple-bill featuring the world premiere of Anthony Braxton's Composition #19, a marching piece for 100 Tubas (yes, 100!), Bang on a Can electric guitarist and instrument inventor Mark Stewart and So Percussion. At 2 p.m. we move into the Wintergarden for an 8-hour art-music blowout. All along the way you will be treated to performances by the Bang on a Can All-Stars (don't miss their set with Don Byron). Other highlights include So Percussion in a special performance with electronica heroes Matmos, Evan Ziporyn with Gamelan Galak Tika and Tactus, Alarm Will Sound playing Aphex Twin and John Adams, duet performances by Glenn Kotche & David Cossin AND William Parker & Jerome Cooper, jazz punk gurus Gutbucket, Michael Harrison's severely re-tuned piano, and lots, lots more! And this year, for the first time ever, the Marathon is free!
