The Score: "Terms of Endearment" (Audio)

May 08, 2011
Hosted by Margo Pelletier and Lisa Thomas.
Our Mother’s Day edition of “The Score” features the musical composer, Michael Gore (baby brother of the singer/song writer, Lesley Gore). Mr. Gore, an Oscar award-winning composer, wrote the score for the 1983 film, Terms of Endearment as well as selected the songs that make up the film’s soundtrack. Terms of Endearment, presents the love between a Mother, Aurora (played by Shirley MacLaine) and a daughter, Emma (played by Debra Winger) that is so deep it hurts. At the same time, it painfully presents the love affair between two diametrically opposed adults ( Aurora/Shirley MacLaine) and Garrett/Jack Nicholson) who are hungry for something real but struggling with aging and an ability to be intimate. Michael Gore’s graceful and emotive compositions and his surprising and fun song selections, carry the contradictions and complications of these love relations masterfully.
