Ann Hepperman's Audio Fiction Class from Sarah Lawrence College (Audio)

May 27, 2017
Produced by many contributors.

This Saturday Afternoon Show broadcast features short radio works produced by students in Ann Hepperman's Audio Fiction class at Sarah Lawrence. An interview with each student, conducted by host Tom Roe, precedes each work. The program includes:

"Strange Sapphic Story," Maghan Baptiste
This episode of Strange Sapphic Stories is a queer surrealist and satirical take on what happens when a man gets the last word on what a butch lesbian should look like.

"Apocalyptic End," JJ Boman
Upon emerging from her apartment for the first time in years, a woman finds herself forced to navigate and exist within a post-apocalyptic world.

"Paperboy," Frances Maples
"Paperboy" is a piece that explores the roots of oral storytelling. It's the type of folklore tale someone might tell around a fire, and so the setting of the piece itself reflects the setting that this story might be told in.

"Your Snake Has Stripes," Abigail Edmonds
An eighty-two page self-published advice book has been an unlikely source of controversy this week. The e- book, titled "Your Snake Has Stripes: A Practical Guide to Married Bliss with an Angry and Contentious Woman" has gained a cult-like following and has risen to the top of the Amazon charts. Women’s groups have spoken out in protest of the book calling the comparison of angry women to venomous pit vipers "sexist". But fans have doubled down in support. We sent WSLC's Abigail Edmonds to a book signing in Green Bay Wisconsin to investigate the source of the anger and contentiousness on both sides of the debate.

"The Red Death," Talie Leeb

"Absolute Encounters," Jude Nagan

"How Shed XII Came to an End," Eli Miller Leonard
The story of an existentially depressed shed that wishes it were a bike.

"Two Truths and a Lie," Georganna Poindexter
Two Truths and a Lie is a spin on a game show setting where a storyteller says two true stories and one false story and then the audience has to guess the lie! This episode is a Sarah Lawrence student telling stories about his wild times on campus. This episode also brings in some fun guests that add commentary to liven up the stories.

"With Intention (For Radio Play)," Michaela Prell
This is a non-narrative collection of poems surrounded by sounds, music, and found recording to create an environment and emotion. Everything sound and word put into the piece was done with intention.

"Jerkwad and Dillweed," Janet Webster
"Jerkwad and Dillweed" is part of a longer narrative series about the two personalities and their producer, Janet, running a call-in podcast.

"Stanton Goes Green," Walker May
"Stanton Goes Green" is the end result of an experimenting child and a curious dog. How does peer pressure at school affect your child's home life? Find out in the latest episode of the Stanton Series.
