Music for the Masses: Ghana's Independence Day, Highlife Special (Audio)
A special 11th Anniversary Pledge Drive edition. On March 6, 1957, the West African republic of Ghana gained its independence from British colonial rule. With its roots in the Gold Coast region (Anglophone West Africa), Highlife music became the expression of a black internationalist movement and pan-African consciousness that drove the independence movements across the motherland and throughout the diaspora. This broadcast explores the cross-cultural phenomenon of Highlife, featuring some of the most notable music and musicians of the 1940s and ‘50s pre-independence years and into the early 1960s.
