Tracking The Odds: Gen Ken Montgomery (Audio)

Aug 23, 2021
Produced by Roulette Intermedium.

Sound artist Gen Ken Montgomery in concert and studio recordings illustrating his multi-layered montage techniques built from found sound, field recordings, and domestic noise (percolators, dripping sinks, etc.). In this edition we hear excerpts from three pieces: a 1989 duo with David Lee Myers (Arcane Device), a 1998 solo, both at Roulette, and a track from his 2002 XI Records release pondfloorsample. Montgomery is a New York based artist whose involvement in Cassette Culture and Mail Art led to the creation of the Generations Unlimited electronic music label with David Prescott and Conrad Schnitzler in 1987. In 1989, with partner Scott Konzelmann aka Chop Shop, Montgomery opened Generator, the first sound art gallery in New York City. Since then he has continued organizing, creating multi-channel cassette performances, championing and archiving the work of his mentor Schnitzler, and widening the net of communication between artists and audiences through the exchange of sounds, images, and unpredictable interventions.
