Prison Voices Project: Hospice Care at Coxasackie Prison and the New York Again Mass Incarceration Rally (Audio)

May 22, 2014
Produced by Cory Fischer-Hoffman.
During the past 40 years the number of men and women behind bars has soared, with many sentenced to serve long mandatory sentences for low-level crimes. As a result, the number of elderly inmates in the penal system is surging, growing by almost 80 percent in a nine-year period. In New York, hundreds of sick and dying imprisoned people navigate the compassionate release system every year, but very few make it out. Those who eventually die behind bars are supported and comforted in their final days by fellow incarcerated people at the hospice unit at Coxsackie Correctional Facility in Greene County. Natasha Haverty reports for Prison Time media project. Plus, continued coverage of the New York Against Mass Incarceration Rally, held in Albany, Mon., May 5. Hosted by Cory Fischer-Hoffman.
