Composers John Cage and Morton Feldman recorded four free-styling conversations at the studios of radio station WBAI in New York between July 1966 and January 1967. These conversations between two old friends, relaxed, smoking, and throwing out ideas, are full of laughter and ponderous silences. Drawing from the ideas of James Joyce, Paul Cezanne, Gertrude Stein, and Buckminster Fuller among others, they examine how in the age of mass consumption, deliverance, and individuality is diminished. They translate these socio-cultural concepts to interpretations of the visual arts and music. This condensed excerpt, Radio Happenings (1966), is deeply revealing of the two masters.
