Nothing Is Real Radio Hour: This Is Your Pharmacy Calling (Audio)

Nov 30, 2021
Produced by Sam Sebren.
For this edition of the Nothing Is Real Radio Hour, host Sam Sebren presents a newly constructed version of “This Is Your Pharmacy Calling,” a piece he originally created for a live broadcast performance in July 2021 utilizing all of the equipment in the WGXC Hudson Studio, plus additional electronics, microphones, and instruments. This constructed version, uses samples, prepared loops, turntable manipulation, processed guitar, vocals, toy piano, synthesizers, field recordings, radio tuning, and answering machine. There is a quasi-narrative of a guy stuck in a machine, trying to find his way out while other distractions continue.

The Nothing Is Real Radio Hour, includes sound and transmission arts works by Athens-based Sam Sebren, who occasionally works by other artists, both pre-recorded and performed live in the studio. In a multidisciplinary practice, much of Sebren's recent work has challenged notions of accepted reality in art, advertising, and public spaces. In mediums including sound, His work blurs actual, imagined, and technological realities as he critiques socio-political rules and regulations in our consumer culture and urges his audience to smile and re-think our priorities.
