Airhead Faculty Meeting - Bethany Ides Assessment Tools with Emily Pope and Julia Santoli (Audio)
Past, present and prospective teachers are invited to review their criteria for assessment using a pedagogical play-set designed by Bethany Ides & Doors Unlimited. Working 1-on-1 we build interpretive models for reimagining learning objectives, criteria for assessment and modes of engagement. The faculty meeting was held at P.P.O.W. Gallery during “Airhead” (June 28 - August 9, 2024) and as a part of Miss Othmar’s School for Teachers.
The listener is not addressed; they listen in on a conversation.
- A “you” relationship.
- Play: Acting before thinking and thinking by acting.
- Teaching is inventing one’s own tools and letting others relate to them personally.
- Teaching is “Yes, and…” and sometimes “are you sure?”
Miss Othmar is the name of that teacher of Charlie Brown that’s heard and never seen. Her voice carries no words and transmits no facts. Her professing is an undulating song. Nevertheless C.B. and his classmates seem to follow along.
Miss Othmar is teaching over radio. "Miss Othmar's Meetings with Teachers" is a series that collects the voices of different teachers and facilitators from a variety of fields and their approaches to leading the listener through exercises over radio.
Bethany Ides is a writer, researcher, teacher, theater-maker and organizer, based between the Shawangunk mountains (clunkily transliterated by Dutch colonial writers from Esopus traditional custodians of the land) and the Mombaccus Creek (adapted from the Dutch word for “mask,” indicating the Delaware Tribe carved tree memorial art that predated their settlement here). She tries to invigorate collectivity, reciprocity, appreciation and speculation however possible.
Timmy Simonds is an artist interested in the ways we perceive education and our expectations of the teacher cross culturally. He broadcasts regularly with Montez Press Radio and Wave Farm's WGXC 90.7-FM.
