Vocal Systems: Extended Vocal Technique Special (Audio)
This month we listen to some works that use Extended Vocal Technique - which is basically anything that falls outside of traditional western vocal singing. I play some proto-EVT with Schoenberg, Ives and Hugo Ball, and some more up to date works from the mid to later 20th century.
"Vocal Systems" explores different types of voice and is part of ongoing research by artist Dave Evans. The show investigates the (human) voice as the individual expression of a connected system and asks if the sounds generated by other assemblages and systems could be considered as voice too. To extend this idea into practice, other non-human forms and systems will co-host the show, speak, and sing. Dave is based in Liverpool, UK, and his work explores how complex networks appear to us and how we can represent them for ourselves.
