2013 Distribution Grant for New York State Artists recipients announced

The Distribution Grant for New York State Artists, a regrant program for the New York State Council on the Arts, Electronic Media and Film, provides support for the distribution of new works in film, video, sound, new-media, and media-installation. Grant awards assist artists in making recently completed works available to public audiences. The following nine projects were selected during a competitive panel review process:

Jason Bernagozzi, Citystream
Citystream is a multi-channel video installation about the city of Syracuse as a complex organism going through liminal states of being and change. The forced pixel abstraction process blends together and ruptures images of people and architecture, reflecting an evolving dialogue about what the city is and what it could become. Distribution funding will be used to acquire additional installation equipment and assist with installation touring expenses.
eteam, The Cruise
The Cruise is a 3.5-hour sound work, a monologue, which chronicles the experience of a woman whose time is spent as a janitor and waitress in a cruise ship's tearoom. Her recorded flow of consciousness is divided into six episodes, each one representing another day, in which the character attempts to follow a strict, mechanical routine, but can’t – as her thoughts keep escaping. Distribution of The Cruise will include the dispersal of 100 solar powered mp3 playback devices for the work. Once a listener experiences the work he/she is instructed to pass the mp3 player onto to a new audience member and encouraged to update the physical location of their specific players on The Cruise website, enabling the artists to track the work's journey.
Shaun Irons & Lauren Petty, Atmospheres & Accidental Ghosts
Atmospheres & Accidental Ghosts is a two-channel generative video and sound installation, which randomly reconfigures and activates a perpetually shifting selection of media. Distribution funding will support the creation of a self-contained touring kit, as well as an online resource about the project include video samples, still images, descriptive text, and artist statements, including technical and touring information in order to secure new venues and exhibition opportunities.
David Linton, The Bicameral Research Sound & Projection System "Cortical Degausser"
First installed at the conclusion of a 2011 Residency at the Clocktower Gallery, Cortical Degausser is a site-specific Intermedia installation in which visitors experience pulsating harmonic bands of colored light and synchronous sound mediated via parabolic diffusion screens. This immersive relational environment stimulates neurological mechanisms within the viewer's own visual cortex triggering the spontaneous display of self animating geometric patterns. Distribution funds will support equipment acquisition in order to make additional installations of Cortical Degausser possible.
Paul Lovelace & Jessica Wolfson, Radio Unnameable
Radio Unnameable is a documentary film focused on the story of disc jockey Bob Fass and his innovative use of the airwaves at WBAI in New York City. Distribution funds will support screening events and the creation of supplementary educational materials. In conjunction with the project touring, Bob Fass will remotely host a radio program at local stations in communities where the film is screening. Lovelace and Wolfson will also expand the film's website as a platform featuring profiles of independent radio stations around the nation: community, college, web, and pirate. In addition, the website will make available content from Bob Fass’s audio archive that was unable to be presented in the film.
LoVid, iParade#2: Unchanged When Exhumed
iParade#2: Unchanged When Exhumed is the second in a series of locative experimental works distributed by LoVid as smartphone apps, called iParade. iParade uses GPS data and includes video, sound, and texts that are accessible only in specific geographic locations. LoVid's distribution plan includes a website, an update to the iParade app, outreach to festivals, exhibition, and public presentation venues.
Jillian McDonald, Valley of the Deer
Shot in Dufftown, Scotland, the natural landscape, traditional highland dress and music, oral folklore and local legend, real and imagined, figure prominently in this experimental video work. Distribution funds will provide audiences with a new means of access to the work through a series of stills brought to life with the augmented reality application, Layar.
Kris Perry, Machines
Machines is comprised of large kinetic sound sculptures crafted from old industrial machinery and scrap metal to create functional instrumentation employed by performing artists to create collaborative and improvisational composition. Funds will support the design and creation of promotional materials and DVD documentation of the project, which will be distributed to potential exhibition and performance venues. Web-based documentation of the project will also serve as a tool as Perry pursues additional public presentation opportunities for Machines.
Laura Vitale, Parts 1-6
Parts 1-6 is a series of six vignettes which each explore the relationship between sound and image through material play. The footage was created through an exploration of sound through materials, and through an exploration of the landscape in White Sands National Monument. Distribution support will assist in outreach to festivals and galleries, as well as DVD distribution and other publication formats including an LP release of the work's audio content.
