La Superette 2008

Dec 13, 2008 - Dec 14, 2008
South Street Seaport

Front St. and John St.

La Superette 2008 will transform a retail space on the corner of Front St. and John St. for two days, creating a temporary store with a huge selection of artist-made multiples from around the country. Enjoying 10 years of success at the cutting edge, La Superette is a unique arts and craft event with a non-commercial goal: to support and distribute the works of independent artists and designers. The variety of items includes hacked clothes, homemade electronic toys, patchwork accessories, houseware, artist books and CDs. Emerging once a year, just in time for holiday shopping, La Superette offers the most unique and affordable shopping experience for hundreds of shoppers year after year. With recent economic and political changes this year more than ever is a time to celebrate the craftiness and creativity, and be a part of an event that represents the true spirit of New York City. Among exciting items are Carrie Paterson's homemade perfume, Dez's bedtime stories CD, Sirin Thada's necklaces, Lady Jane's yoga bags, Petra Farinha's computer icons accessories, and Jessica Delfino's homemade maxi pads. La Superette 2008 features a commissioned installation by NY artist Yoav Bergner that will display the merchandise, a window installation by NY sculptor Kim Holleman, a gift wrapping station by ScrapCycle and a video catalog by Thessia Machado with song by MP Lockwood. To make the Superette shopping experience more enjoyable the event includes performances by Marisa Olson, Dafna Naftali, and Warren Malone among others. Also included in this year’s celebration is the renegade bakery Sweet Tooth of the Tiger selling homemade treats. And finally, to celebrate La Superette’s 10 year anniversary, a full color book is being published with contributions by many of the artists from the past 10 years. The book will be premiered and sold at this year’s festivities.
