Dec 26, 2011
Hosted by Severine von Tscharner Fleming.
Camilla Hammer is the farm manager of The Battery Urban Farm, an educational urban farm started by the Battery Conservancy in 2011 to provide a space for downtown residents to learn about the values and practice of sustainable agriculture. Camilla first fell in love with farming while studying abroad in India, as an intern at Solitude Farm in Auroville. From there she took time off from the Gallatin School at NYU to travel around Europe hoping to find examples of farms and communities that practiced true self sufficiency. She eventually found what she was looking for as an apprentice at Live Power Community Farm in Covelo, CA, where she was was exposed to biodynamics, the wonders of the California climate, and Hakurei turnips, her favorite vegetable. In 2011, she returned to New York City and was hired by the Battery Conservancy to start the Battery Urban Farm, where she now serves as the farm manager.
