free103point9 and Rhizome are pleased to present Surge Live at Participant, Inc. A reception to celebrate Surge an online exhibition exploring the aesthetics of wireless transmission. With presentations by several of the featured artists: 31 Down,
Angel Nevarez, and NYSAE (New York Society for Acoustic Ecology).
At this one-night event and reception, all of the Surge projects will be on view. Angel Nevarez, 31 Down, and NYSAE (New York Society for Acoustic Ecology) will give brief presentations on their pieces. Join us for a reception at 6:30 p.m. and presentations at 7 p.m.
Angel Nevarez will present documentation of The Lowdrone. Made in collaboration with artist Alex Rivera, The Lowdrone melds the lowrider, a customized vehicle with hydraulics and candy coated paint, with the functionality of the drone, an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with surveillance cameras that has been standard U.S. military fare since the 60s. Initially commissioned for INSITE 2005/Tijuana Calling, The LowDrone is the worlds first flying lowrider, outfitted with wireless video transmission capabilities and conditioned for remote aerial flight. Through The LowDrone website, users are able to simulate flight over one of the most surveilled spaces on the planet: the U.S./Mexico border between Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico and San Diego, California.
Artists of the NYSoundmap project Andrea Williams, Edmund Mooney, Andrea Polli and Sha sha Feng will discuss their common fascination with sound and its relationship to natural and cultural environments. The NYSoundmap is an ongoing project by the New York Society for Acoustic Ecology (NYSAE), an organization dedicated to exploring the role of sound in natural and urban settings. The NYSoundmap focuses on the New York City sound environment and includes multiple recordings such as the webradio program Giant Ear))), a series of experiences called City in a Soundwalk by Michelle Nagai, an interface to access historical sound works called Protest Transport Celebrate by Andrea Callard and Sound-Seeker, a googlemap interface that allows visitors access to sounds recorded in the five boroughs of NYC. Later HSDOM (aka Jochen Hartmann) will create a live mix of the NYSoundmap sounds.
31 Downs Mike Sharpie and Dr. Natasha Medvedenko will present their work the Somnambulator, a project that sets out to alleviate current manifestations of the Stendahl Syndrome, a psychosomatic illness caused by overexposure to beautiful art named after the French writer Marie Henri Boyle (1783-1842). Here, the artists ironically assert, this syndrome may be incurred by the visual content of the web; and offer the Somnambulator as an antidote. At this presentation, you will learn more about how living a Somnambulated life can increase your energy, vitality and desire for virtual freedom.

31 Down: The Somnambulator presents a three-step web process, featuring a live web transmission of a windmill, that is meant to hypnotize viewers and enable their exit from the hyper-visual and overwhelming terrain of the internet.
Jimpunk: Rrose AsCii morse Code is a looping one-shot take of a portrait of Rrose Sélavy, the feminine alter ego of Marcel Duchamp.
Abe Linkoln and Marisa Olson: Universal Acid employs the format of a video blog to document the transmission, manipulation and re-broadcast of music videos. Encompassing various genres, the videos echo the evolution of music recording technologies, while also creating a visual narrative about the evolution of a work of art.
Angel Nevarez and Alex Rivera: The LowDrone is the worlds first flying lowrider, outfitted with wireless video transmission capabilities and conditioned for remote aerial flight. Unlike standard drones that are manned by the military, The Lowdrone is driven by visitors to the projects site.
NYSAE: the NYsoundmap is a platform for the aural mapping of New York City. Through wide-scale participation, NYsoundmap reaches across geographic, economic and cultural boundaries to generate unique cartographical aural representations of the city.
Leslie Sharpe: SendingSGLLLL blends recordings from the sites of Guglielmo Marconi's first wireless transfer stations in Canada in a podcast and geocache project that explores the life of signals lost in the process of transmission. (image)

free103point9 is a non-profit media arts organization focused on establishing and cultivating Transmission Arts. This genre includes experimental practices in radio art, video art, light sculpture, and installation and performance utilizing the wireless spectrum. free103point9 activities support and promote artists exploring transmission mediums for creative expression. free103point9 programs include transmission-based public performances and exhibitions, an experimental music series, an online radio station and distribution label, an education initiative, and an artist residency program and study center.
Founded in 1997 as a microcasting artist collective, free103point9's goals during the formative years were focused on the microradio movement fight's for public access to the airwaves. free103's mobile operations made airtime available to community voices, local bands, and most significantly to a group of under-served artists shaping conceptual works specifically for radio transmission. www.free103point9.org

Rhizome.org is an online platform for the global new media art community. Our programs support the creation, presentation, discussion and preservation of contemporary art that uses new technologies in significant ways.
Rhizome was founded in 1996 as a mailing list for some of the first artists experimenting with making art online. Since that time, Rhizome has established itself as a central hub for the new media art field and come to offer a variety of resources and services including archives of art and critical writing, new media arts-related publications, an annual Commissions program, and a youth outreach initiative. Rhizome became a nonprofit in 1998, and formed an affiliation with the New Museum of Contemporary Art in 2003. www.rhizome.org
