The New York Post reported that a Saudi national with shrapnel wounds was in custody at a Boston hospital. The Associated Press said cell phone service had been shut down in Boston to prevent someone from triggering a bomb remotely. Many outlets reported BBs in the bombs. These reports were later proved false. The Atlantic Wire traces the entire history of the rumor of the link between a small fire at the JFK Library, and how the media got those reports, and treated that information. And the Truth Broadcast Network, and others, seized on the slurry of information, some false, some true, to craft a host of conspiracy theories before anyone took credit for the explosions.
