Wave Farm welcomes Jassie Rios who will present Drawings for Radio: Gramophonics live in the WGXC Acra Studio for this special edition of the Saturday Afternoon.
Jassie Rios is an intermedia artist based in Washington, D.C.. The scope of her inquiry is motivated by conceptual, experimental, and formal investigations in drawing involving experimental media, installation, language, sound and video. She looks for ways to extend the boundaries between the audible/visual, fixed/variable, line/wave, and how the sound/noise boundary is perceived and created.
Writes Rios, "I will be using gramophones and several 78 rpm records to generate a series of performative, experimental drawings for radio."
I am fascinated by how the manual act of playing records on a wind up gramophone could be potentially perceived as a modern day turntable. Using a gramophone and a steel needle gives it a new function, one that postdates its intended use; it also embodies the sonic, visual and performative aspects of drawing.
