Jim Paul at the Ancram Opera House uploaded this video of the raising of the new gazebo there last weekend.

"In February, 2013, a windy storm blew down the gazebo at the Ancram Opera House. We'd had dances and parties in it and many great summer afternoons, but after that night it was flattened, a pile of cedar beams. The roof flew off intact and landed about ten feet south of its previous position. Faced with a really big bill for rebuilding it, we decided to ask a few friends who might like taking on a timber-framing project to raise it with us Amish-style. Led by master carpenter and contractor Dan Martin and assisted by a big forklift to pick up the existing roof, we cut mortise holes and set up new posts. Then, with the forklift, we set the roof back on top. That's what you see here. It turned out to be a festive day. People brought food, and others just came to watch. Once we lifted the roof back on the new posts--reinforced with diagonal braces to keep the building up for a few more winters--we added a new bannistered railing. The whole thing got done in a day. Now we're ready for many summers of gatherings in the new gazebo."

Brian Nearing in the Albany Times-Union reports that a solar flare from the sun two days ago could bring a rare display of the northern lights as far south as Maryland. Clouds, predicted for New York skies, may block the view. "This was a pretty big solar flare, as flares go," said Jim Napolitano, a physics professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday. While the view of the northern lights may be clouded, the solar flare, expected around 8 p.m., may effect cell phones, GPS, radios, and other frequencies. Read the full story in the Times-Union.

• W.T. Eckert is reporting in The Daily Mail Greene County officials are calling for state officials to allocate funds collected from wireless fees back to the counties to support 911 and public safety communications. The state now imposes a $1.20 public safety surcharge per month on all cell phones. Although the original intent was for the surcharge to be used for 911 operations and to help first responders communicate and respond to emergencies, a very small portion is now allocated to the county for that purpose. Greene County’s Public Safety Committee Chairman William Lawrence (R-Cairo) said the funds could be be used for emergency equipment, personnel training and continuing education. Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail Vincent Seeley has been reappointed to his ninth term as Catskill Village President. This will be Seeley's 10th year of service as a village trustee, his ninth as president. Seeley was elected to the Greene County Legislature in November and widespread speculation followed that he would hand off the presidency to another trustee as a result. Seeley has repeatedly defended the dual roles, denying any potential conflict of interest. The point of running for the Legislature, he said, was to “create a true connection between village, town and county.” Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star plans to merge the Columbia County Youth Bureau and the Department of Social Services are underway. The proposal is currently being reviewed by the state Office of Family Services. Under the plan, the Youth Bureau would remain independent, but work within the Department of Social Services to share resources. DSS Commissioner Paul Mossman said the Youth Bureau would have access to more resources and support in a more "cost effective" way. The Bureau currently employs a director full time, along with a part-time clerk/typist. Last year, the Bureau distributed more than $40,000 to organizations that offer youth-related programming countywide. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star the sale of the Claverack School by the Hudson City School District has been delayed. The sale will not close until the fall, due to a need for the property to be rezoned to fit the potential buyer’s commercial needs. The district requested the zoning change. The buyer is Shari Kline, owner of Traditions Linens. The purchase must be approved by district voters. Because the rezoning process will not be completed in advance of the school board and budget vote, May 21, a vote on the sale will now be delayed until the fall. Kline's business, which employs 17 people, is currently based in Claverack and Livingston. She now intends to consolidate operations at one location in the former school, located on Route 23B. The 13,000-square-foot historic building is now serving as the temporary home for the Columbia County courts during a year-long renovation of the county courthouse building. One of his early influences was Kurt Schwitters, whose Ursonate he first heard in 1979; he memorized the entire work, and it became one of the cornerstones of his repertory; he has recited portions of the piece hundreds of times in various public places.[2] His compositions and performances are examples of sound poetry, making use of words and phonetic snippets as well as clicks, hisses, and other vocal manipulations. He works as a solo performer, in collaboration with avant-garde musicians such as John Tchicai, Tristan Honsiger, and Mats Gustafsson, and with his own ensembles Splinks and BRAAXTAAL.[1] His live performances involve humor and improvisation, and are occasionally received poorly by audiences, as when he was booked as an opener for punk rock band The Stranglers early in the 1980s.

Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail state Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) visited Catskill Wed., Apr. 10, and unveiled several economic development initiatives aimed at supporting farms and small businesses. The first-term senator's legislative package includes a focus on expanded broadband access in rural and under-served areas and a program of loans and grants to support small farm modernization and disaster relief. Tkzczyk said, “We need to help businesses who are here already be successful and we need to get more entrepreneurs into Greene County and more farmers growing." Her broadband bill would encourage the expansion of high speed internet by awarding tax credits to companies that install new broadband service. The two farm bills would help channel capital to small farms for the purchase of new equipment and to replace crops lost as a result of natural disasters. Tkaczyk presented her ideas to a group of Greene County officials and business leaders, including Greene County Legislature Chairman Wayne Speenburgh and Catskill Village President and Greene County Legislator Vincent Seeley. W.T. Eckert writes in The Daily Mail suspended Cairo Police Chief and Catskill Police Officer Christopher Sprague was back in court, Wed., Apr. 10. He was rearraigned in Hunter Town Court after the case was transferred from Cairo due to a conflict of interest. Greene County Judge George J. Pulver Jr has also ordered Sprague's prosecution be handled by Schoharie County District Attorney James Sacket. Sprague was arrested on charges of tampering with evidence and filing false reports, March 21, based on allegations leveled by the state police. He is expected back in court April 24. Barbara Reina reports in the Register Star new Valatie Village Mayor Diane Argyle announced Tues., Apr. 9, she will take a voluntary cut in pay. Argyle will reduce her salary by $1,500 and return the funds to the village budget. The village board rejected trustee salary increases, as well. Also Tuesday, Argyle selected Trustee Frank Bevens to serve as deputy mayor. She also appointed resident Angelo Nero to fill the open trustee seat formerly held by Jennifer Kolb. Dominick Lizzi was appointed to the post of village historian. Lizzi was historian for 16 years, until he was removed from the position following a suspected difference of opinion with then-mayor Gary Strevell. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Thomas Kaplan reports in The New York Times Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, responding to the arrests last week of two state lawmakers on bribery charges, said Tues., Apr. 9, he would propose legislation that would make it easier for district attorneys to prosecute public corruption. The legislation would stiffen penalties for rogue politicians. Cuomo also said he would seek to make it a misdemeanor for any elected official or government employee to witness bribery and fail to report it. Cuomo's proposals were somewhat technical in nature, and the Legislature has considered similar measures for several years, but the announcement showed how the latest scandals have abruptly reshaped the legislative session. Three months ago, in the annual State of the State Address, Cuomo never said the word corruption, even though he vowed to clean up state government when he campaigned for governor in 2010. Kyle Adams is reporting in the Daily Mail the public comment portion of the proposed acquisition of CH Energy Group by Fortis, Inc. has been extended, following pressure by state Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) and others. CH Energy is the parent company of the Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation. Fortis owns utility companies in Canada and the Caribbean, and currently services more than two million customers. Tkaczyk is calling for more transparency around the sale. “The Public Service Commission is supposed to be a watchdog, protecting consumers,” she wrote in a prepared statement. “Hudson Valley families and businesses are already paying outrageously high utility bills, and they need reassurances that this proposed sale with not increase energy costs....”The $1.5 billion merger has already been approved by the CH Energy shareholders, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Public Service Commission extended the comment period by 45 days, as of April 1. Two additional hearings have been scheduled: At Civic Center Plaza in Poughkeepsie on April 17, and at Kingston Town Hall, April 18. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star farms in Livingston, Stuyvesant, Taghkanic and Red Hook will now be protected with more than $5 million in recently secured funds. The money was provided by the federal Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program and the nonprofit organization Scenic Hudson, along with funds from Dutchess County, the Town of Red Hook and the Columbia Land Conservancy. The funds will be used to purchase easements at seven farms to protect the farmlands’ character and prevent the properties from being subdivided or sold to developers for other commercial purposes. According to Scenic Hudson President Ned Sullivan, each farmer can decide what to do with the money. U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson worked to help secure more than $2 million in federal funds for the easement purchases through the federal Farm and Ranch Land Protection Program.
