Joe Gentile reports in the Register Star Germantown Elementary School Principal Sue Brown has been chosen as the Germantown Central School District's new superintendent of schools. The board made the announcement, Wed., July 10. Brown was chosen from a field of 38 candidates. She succeeds Patrick Gabriel, who served in the district's top spot for nearly seven years. Brown signed a three-year contract, effective Sept. 1. A community stakeholder group, made up of parents, community members and staff, interviewed candidates in May, and provided feedback to the Board of Education. The board then met with finalists in June. The board has yet to decide on Brown's replacement at the elementary school. Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail the village of Catskill is in the early stages of enacting a law to protect trees planted in public areas from being cut down or damaged. The measure seeks to protect, among others, trees that are being planted as part of the Main Street Memorial Trees program. The program, funded by private donations, has planted 12 trees on Main Street since spring and has 10 more ready to plant in the fall. The law under consideration is based on the “Village Shade Tree Ordinance” adopted last month in Saugerties. To accompany the law, the village will create a tree commission to oversee the care and maintenance of the trees. The law is expected to go into effect Jan. 1, 2014. Jim Planck reports in The Daily Mail the U.S. Postal Service has finished its review of the Haines Falls Post Office. The Postal Service is downsizing nationwide as part of a cost-savings initiative called the POST Plan. An announcement was made last week the location will remain open, but its hours of operation will be cut instead. Beginning Aug. 10, the post office will be open 8 a.m. to noon, close for three hours, then reopen from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday hours will remain the same, from 8 a.m. until noon. Local residents have expressed strong support for the plan. The only other area post office currently under review is Freehold. Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail the village of Catskill has compiled a list of 15 properties deemed high-priority for redevelopment efforts, as part of its long-term waterfront revitalization plan. The village is working in cooperation with the Greene County Industrial Development Agency. The properties were chosen based on location, current use, prior use and potential for environmental contamination, access, and how well it aligned with the village’s vision for the waterfront. Phase one of the project is expected to be completed by Jan. 1, 2014. A representative of the planning firm involved in the inventory said the ultimate goal is to get the properties developed, producing jobs and taxes and contributing to the local economy. Rick Karlin reports at Capitol Confidential the state of New York ranks 33rd nationwide in the latest state-by-state business ranking. Television network CNBC graded the states based on the cost of living, taxes on income, property and business, infrastructure, quality of the workforce, energy prices and quality of life, as key factors in their survey. Barbara Reina reports in the Register Star Valatie Village Trustee Amy Freinberg-Trufas has resigned from the Village Board effective immediately. Mayor Diane Argyle announced the resignation at the Village Board meeting Tues., July 9. Freinberg-Trufas is the second trustee to resign from the board since Argyle's election. Former Deputy Mayor Jennifer Kolb resigned in March. Argyle did not comment on the resignation. In an interview, Freinberg-Trufas told Reina she wanted to leave the board on a positive note. “I just felt it was time,” she said. Off-Off-Broadway is reporting the upcoming Theatre Now New York production of "Cabaret" at the Pocketbook Factory in Hudson has been cancelled, following the withdrawal of one of the project's primary financial backers. Artistic Director Thomas Morrissey said the company was "devastated" by the decision. He said, "The people of Hudson have been so welcoming to us and we hope that they will welcome us back in the future." Theatre Now New York is a professional theater company based in New York City. John Mason reports in the Register Star attorneys for the town of Ghent and the transformer dismantling and transporting company TCI New York, agreed Mon., July 8, the company will waive its conflict of interest claim against the Ghent Planning Board’s environmental attorney. The company and the town also suspended all litigation for six months. If, at the end of six months, TCI withdraws its application to rebuild, the town and TCI will exchange releases of any and all claims against each other, “and the matter will be done,” Ghent Town Attorney Ted Guterman said in a press conference following Monday’s court hearing. TCI has also agreed to pay the town $12,500 in outstanding fees stemming from the town’s review of TCI’s application, and up to $2,500 in potential fees. The company is suspending its application for a building permit during the six-month period. TCI's 30,000-square-foot plant on Falls Industrial Road was destroyed by fire Aug. 1. The company is temporarily operating out of Coeymans, and seeking site plan approval there. It is also in discussion with three other locations, including Ghent. The Register Star is reporting the Copake Republican caucus has endorsed a slate of candidates for the November general election that includes a former superintendent of schools. David Paciencia (PAH-see-en-see-ah), superintendent of the Taconic Hills Central School District from 2001 to 2007, was the caucus choice for Town Board. Paciencia said, "I have no political bucket list. I simply want to give something back to our community.” The caucus also endorsed Glenn Schermerhorn (SKEH-mer-horn) for town justice and incumbent Town Board member Jean Mettier (MET-tier). In a joint statement, the Copake Republican Committee and Copake Republican Club said the candidates, with their experience and credentials, are the best choice for the betterment of Copake. Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. will begin work on Water St., Catskill, Wed., July 9, to improve its natural gas service to the village. The construction will stretch from the Black Bridge to the staircase entrance of the Greene County Office Building parking lot. The work is expected to take about three weeks. The project is intended to increase reliability for customers on the east side of the creek. The street will remain open but will be restricted to one lane during the construction period. Nathan Mayberg reported in the Register Star U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson of Kinderhook announced last week he is co-sponsoring legislation to limit the ability of the federal government to collect information on Americans who are not under investigation. The proposed law, known as the LIBERT-E Act, would also require that opinions issued by the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act court be made public. Gibson called the Patriot Act’s allowance for “roving wire taps” unconstitutional. Gibson, who served in the military for nearly three decades, said his opposition to the growing practice of domestic surveillance is based in the belief the government has the duty to protect the Bill of Rights. William J. Kemble reported in the Daily Freeman consultants say a sewer district can be formed early next year for property owners in the hamlet of Leeds. John Brust, a principal owner of the firm Delaware Engineering, said last week work is expected to begin this summer on the state Environmental Quality Review of the project, and on a survey of where sewer lines would extend from the village of Catskill sewer system. Brust said his firm will help form the sewer district. He said public meetings will be help as that happens. The price tag on the new sewer system was previously estimated at nearly $8.7 million. Melanie Lekocevic reported in The Daily Mail the Athens Village Board last week heard a proposal from utility provider Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. to bring natural gas to portions of the village and town. The first phase of the project could be completed by the end of this year, and would make natural gas available to approximately 50 homes. The cost of building the infrastructure would be borne by Central Hudson, with no cost to the village or the town. Individual property owners would pay for conversion, anywhere from $3,000 to $6,000 per home. Central Hudson estimates an average household saves $1,600 per year using natural gas instead of oil. Paul Nelson reported in the Times Union a Columbia County man faces a charge of menacing and a gun charge for allegedly threatening a neighbor, according to State Police in Livingston. The 64-year-old resident of Claverack apparently became upset and is accused of threatening an apple farmer with a gun because the man was spraying his apple tree on Fish & Game Road. The man was arraigned and released pending a court appearance Tues., July 9. Read the full story in the Times Union.

The Associated Press reports a 26-year-old Millbrook man was injured by lightning at Lake Taghkanic State Park in Ancram Sunday afternoon. A state parks department spokesperson said the lightning hit a tree near where the man was standing, the charge knocked him down and he went into cardiac arrest. Fourth of July celebrations this weekend:

In Durham, a parade will begin at 11 a.m. Sat., July 6, and travel down Main Street, (state Route 145) ending at the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural and Sports Centre where refreshments will be served. Congressman Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) will attend. Live entertainment will be provided by the Good Ole Boys and trophies will be awarded to parade participants. Fireworks will be launched at dusk.

In Tannersville a street party with vendors and live music will begin at 1 p.m., Sat., July 6, followed by a parade at 3 p.m. Congressman Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) will attend. A concert featuring jazz trumpeter Etienne Charles will begin at 4 p.m. at the Orpheum Performing Arts Center.

In Poughkeepsie, Pete Seeger, are holding a Peace Vigil Memorial at the Rt. 9/9D intersection in Poughkeepsie from noon to 2 p.m., and fireworks and other activities are planned elsewhere in the town later in the day.
