Adam Clayton is reporting in the Register Star the Eldridge for Congress campaign has established a field office on upper Columbia St. in Hudson. The space had its soft opening Wed., July 2. Democrat Eldridge is challenging incumbent Republican Chris Gibson of Kinderhook for the 19th Congressional District seat in November. Campaign staffer William Friedman said there will be a staff member in the office every day to talk with voters. Eldridge parted ways with campaign manager Mike Reid recently and intends to move his campaign in a different direction during the last months of the race, Friedman said. A date for the grand opening of the Hudson office has not yet been set. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Children’s book author Walter Dean Myers has died following a brief illness. News of his passing on Tues., July 1, was reported at his website. Myers was 76 years old. He wrote more than 100 books for children of all ages during a 45-year career. He was best known for his eloquent and unflinching portrayals of young African-Americans. In an interview with Hudson Talbott on WGXC in May 2012, Myers spoke of how books transmit value: PLAY (:40). Myers also spoke about the importance of reading: PLAY (:58). Myers served as the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature from 2012 to 2014. It was in that capacity that he delivered the keynote address at the 2012 Hudson Children's Book Festival. His body of work included two Newbery Honor Books, three National Book Award Finalists and six Coretta Scott King Awards. Myers lived in Jersey City, New Jersey. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Flash Flood Watch from noon Thurs., July 3 through midnight, Fri., July 4, for portions of western Massachusetts, east central New York and southern Vermont, including Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Ulster, and Schoharie counties. The combination of saturated ground, combined with more likely heavy rainfall from thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening could produce rapid water rises resulting in flooding. If flash flooding occurs, act quickly. Move to higher ground at once. Get away from places subject to rapid flooding, such as dry creek beds or places along streams.

A newly reorganized Cairo-Durham Board of Education voted Tues., July 1, to close the Cairo-Durham Elementary School located in Durham. The resolution passed on a vote of six to one. Robert Criswell abstained; Beth Daly was not present. The decision, effective Sept. 1, reverses the action taken by the board last month to keep the building open. The board vote clearly upset Durham Town Supervisor Bill Carr who stood and insulted board members for promising "to do their best" to facilitate the district's consolidation plan going forward. Carr's vulgar language got him ejected from the meeting by new board member Stephen Brandow. Audrey Matott reported in The Daily Mail Brandow, David Infantino and Robert MacGiffert were all sworn during the reorganization meeting that preceded the vote. The newly seated Infantino was then elected board president. Second-year member Peter Byrne was chosen vice president. William J. Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman the Catskill Town Board has appointed Erica Russo as permanent activities aide at the Washington Irving Senior Center. A second person is expected to be hired to handle clerk duties, as well. Information was not immediately available on how much Russo would be paid, although officials believe the position would require approximately 25 hours per week. The center has been without a designated director since Anne Marie Moran was arrested in March and charged with grand larceny and identity theft. Moran pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Associated Press is reporting New York's school immunization requirements have been updated for the first time in more than a decade. The State Department of Health says the new requirements for school attendance do not add any new vaccines for school entry, but they update the number of doses required and the minimum intervals between doses. The new requirements took effect Tues., July 1, and apply to students in daycare, Head Start, nursery, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten through 12th grade.

The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for northwestern Connecticut, western Massachusetts, east central New York and southern Vermont. Thunderstorms are likely Wednesday afternoon and evening. The storms could become strong to locally severe with wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as an inch in diameter. High temperatures will reach around 90 degrees in most valley locations on Wednesday, as well. Dewpoints will be close to 70 degrees. This will translate to apparent temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. It may be prudent to limit outdoor activity during the heat of the day.

Jim Planck is reporting in The Daily Mail the Catskill Republican Committee has endorsed retired law enforcement officer Rick Jacobs over serving Village Justice Maria LaRosa as the party's candidate for Catskill Town Justice in the November election. Jacobs was chosen during a meeting of the GOP caucus, Mon., June 30. Jacobs is a political newcomer. He served for 33 years with the Catskill Police Department before retirement. LaRosa has been an attorney for nearly 10 years. She was elected Catskill Village Justice in 2010. Incumbent Town Justice Peter Margolius is not seeking re-election. Also on hand Monday night was GOP candidate for District Attorney Joe Stanzione. Matt Luvera is the chairman of the Catskill Republican Committee. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.

William J. Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman AARP says summer cooling costs for consumers in New York state could be almost 10 percent higher than a year ago. The group’s warning comes less than two weeks after concerns were raised about Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. sending a growing number of shutoff notifications to customers. AARP advocates on behalf of Americans over the age of 50. In its latest statement, AARP says older residents and families on budgets could be faced with deciding between staying cool and risking health problems. The group said the anticipated summer rate represents a jump of 9.9 percent, and that rate could go higher. A Central Hudson spokesman blamed the federally mandated capacity zone in part for the increase. He also said Central Hudson rates are in reality lower than the rates cited by AARP. Michael Hill is reporting for the Associated Press New York's top court handed a victory to opponents of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas Mon., June 30, by affirming the right of municipalities to ban the practice within their borders. The state Court of Appeals upheld a mid-level appeals court ruling from last year that said the state oil and gas law does not trump the authority of local governments to control land use through zoning. The cases have been closely watched by drillers hoping to tap into the state's piece of the Marcellus Shale formation and by environmentalists who fear water and air pollution. The court in a 5-2 decision stressed that it did not consider the merits of fracking, only the authority of municipalities to regulate land use. The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for northwestern Connecticut, western Massachusetts, the southern Catskills, Mid-Hudson Valley, Greater Capital District, Taconics and Lake George Saratoga Region of east central New York, as well as southern Vermont. There is a chance of mainly non-severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening. Any thunderstorm that does form will move southwest to northeast at around 30 mph. The combination of temperatures reaching around 90 in valley locations and dewpoints well in the 60s will produce heat indices in the mid to upper 90s. This is the first time this year the heat indices will be this high, so everyone is advised to take it easy during the heat of the afternoon and drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages.

Some of the stories that made the news, Fri., June 27 through Mon., June 30:

The Associated Press is reporting environmental clean-up crews responded to an oil spill at the Port of Albany after 100 gallons of oil spilled out of a rail car this weekend. The spill was contained by Sunday afternoon and no oil went into the Hudson River. Brian Tumulty reported in the Poughkeepsie Journal New York officials are reviewing a request by CSX to not publicly disclose movements of its freight trains carrying crude oil across the state. The state began receiving weekly information about the shipments earlier this month under an emergency order signed in May by U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. The routing information is being shared with state public safety officials. Those officials are expected to communicate the relevant shipment information with local first responders at some point, although there's no indication as to when that coordination will begin. There have been 16 significant freight rail accidents in the U.S. and Canada since 2006, including one last July that killed 47 people. Freight trains carrying 100 or more tanker cars of crude oil regularly run through western New York to terminals in the Albany area. The oil arriving in Albany is either moved through the Port of Albany for shipment by barge and tanker, or on the CSX river line on the western shore of the Hudson River south to New Jersey.

Kyle Adams reported in The Daily Mail on the nearly complete digital transition of the Hi-Way Drive-In in Coxsackie. Roger Babcock, owner with his wife Sharon of the theater since the 1970s, expects all four screens to be fully digital in a couple of weeks. “You go digital or you go out of business,” Babcock said. The theater's transition from 35mm film prints has cost an estimated $146,000. The Greenville Drive-In has not been so lucky. That theater went dark this summer after it was unable to come up with the funds for new equipment. The Jericho Drive-In in Glenmont is still running 35mm films and is hoping to raise the money for a digital conversion by the end of the season.

The New York State Police announced Sat., June 28, the two teenage girls reported missing from the Berkshire Girls home in Ancram had been located. Christine Bitting and Breanna LaJoie were returned to the facility. The girls went missing the afternoon of Wed., June 25.

John Mason reported in the Register Star a proposal has been made by the Hudson Development Corporation that would allow the Hudson Islamic Center to stay at its current location on North Third Street in Hudson. That plan calls for the center to lease the land from the development corporation for 100 years. The Center's plans to build a mosque at that location have been stalled for nearly six months. Islamic Center President and Second Ward Alderman Abdus Miah (AHB-duce ME-ah) said the center does not wish to lease the property, it wants to own it. Conversations with Hudson Development Corporation are ongoing. Miah said he believes something can, and will be worked out.

Nearly 1,000 high school seniors in Columbia and Greene counties received their diplomas in ceremonies held Fri., June 27, as family and friends turned out to celebrate the successful completion of 13 years of education. Graduating classes varied in size — the Windham-Ashland-Jewett High School senior class consisted of 31 students, while the Ichabod Crane Class of 2014 boasted 150 members. Brian Hubert in The Daily Freeman reports New York Senator Chuck Schumer says more than 2,200 state bridges, including 423 in the Hudson Valley, are considered functionally obsolete or structurally deficient, and he wants to increase federal funding to fix them. The current transportation bill in Congress would lock in funding at current levels, which Schumer finds unacceptable given the current situation. Jim Planck reported in the Greene County News this week the town of New Baltimore recently renewed its expired franchise agreement with Mid-Hudson Cablevision. The new, 15-year contract permits the cable provider to operate within the town in exchange for a five-percent fee. The company will also make available audio-visual equipment for recording various town functions, including public meetings. Those meetings would then be broadcast over the local access channel. The town's previous agreement with Mid-Hudson expired in 2013. Asked if Mid-Hudson has any plans to expand into areas of New Baltimore not currently served, Mid-Hudson representative David Fingar said the company will consider those requests, if feasible. The Amateur Radio Relay League hosts Field Day nationwide this weekend, where amateur radio operators work as many stations as possible on any and all amateur bands (excluding the 60, 30, 17, and 12-meter bands) and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. On the fourth weekend of June of each year, more than 35,000 radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or friends to operate from remote locations. Field Day transmissions will be beaming from Cairo, Philmont, East Greenbush, Albany, and elsewhere. Rock talked to the man until another man he seemed to know appeared to also talk him off the bridge. "Greene County 911 and Columbia County 911 said no one made any calls to them regarding the potential jumper," Clayton writes, reporting that the Catskill Police Department also did not receive any reports of an incident. "Rock said he believes the incident happened so fast many people had no idea what was happening, and that there probably was not enough time for anyone to call the police." John Mason is reporting in the Register Star the Galvan Foundation and Housing Resources of Columbia County are embarking on a collaboration, according to statements released Wed., June 25. Henry van Ameringen, cofounder with T. Eric Galloway of Galvan, called the collaboration “an opportunity to ensure Housing Resources remains a formidable provider of affordable housing...." Housing Resources Board Chairman David Pearce said Galloway and Ameringen will provide "considerable expertise and support to Housing Resources’ mission of preserving and maintaining decent, safe and affordable housing in Columbia County." Ameringen and Galvan will assume seats on the Housing Resources Board of Directors. Pearce did not confirm if there will be a financial component to the relationship. He acknowledged Galvan's grant program and the variety of individuals and organizations that have received funding, but said only "...I’m sure we will, too." Read the full story in the Register Star.
