Dozens of corrections officers protested outside the Coxsackie Correctional Facility Wed., Nov. 5 to protest the recent suspension of a corrections officer after a female officer was attacked by an inmate. From 6:30 to 9 a.m. the officers marched along Route 9W with hand-held picket signs that questioned DOCCS reasoning for suspending an officer after an inmate serving a 20-year sentence hid in a closet in a supply room and then attacked a female officer when she walked into the room. "The union’s contention is that the officer was suspended as a result of DOCCS effort to draw attention away from recent criticism levied against the administration by the union in a statewide press campaign that started last Tuesday in Elmira," the correctional union said in a press release. "The campaign is designed to draw public attention to the increase in staff assaults by inmates, inaccurate reporting of assaults by DOCCS, failure to fill budgeted positions, staff facilities adequately and provide a safe work environment." Rick Karlin is reporting at Capitol Confidential on the day following the general election, opponents of the SAFE Act gun control law pointed to several upstate GOP Senate victories as proof that unhappiness with the law remains strong. One group pointed to the races in the 41st, 46th 55th Senate Districts where Republicans Sue Serino, George Amedore and Richard Funke defeated Terry Gipsen, Cecilia Tkaczyk and Ted O’Brien respectively. In fact, it is not totally clear how much the SAFE Act actually played a part in voters' choices, although Amedore, who was on Fred Dicker’s Talk 1300 radio show Wed., Nov. 5, said he believes the law was a major factor in his victory. Audrey Matott in The Daily Mail writes that the Department of Labor’s accident report after the Aug. 23 injury to local pastor, Rev. Paul Meador, on Zoom Flume Water Park’s Canyon Plunge ride, was due to several errors by the East Durham water park. According to details provided in a press release from the law firm of Martin, Harding & Mazzotti, violations cited were failure to report a serious accident within 24 hours, failure to provide age appropriate staffing for the ride, failure to inspect the slide prior to opening to public use, and failure to manage a maintenance and safety schedule for the slide. Specifically about the accident, the report says when cleaning the slide the night before, a drainage plug was not put back into place, not allowing water to enter the run-up at the end of the slide. Also, the lifeguard who was supposed to be stationed at the bottom of the slide was held up at another slide, waiting to be relieved by another employee so that he could move onto his station at the Canyon Plunge. Meador underwent multiple surgeries at Albany Medical Center and is confined to a wheelchair for at least the next six months. Meador is the presiding pastor at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Coeymans Hollow and the Dormansville United Methodist Church, and was on an outing with the youth group from his church when the accident occurred. Casey Seiler is reporting at Capitol Confidential Republicans took sole control of the state Senate following Tues., Nov. 4, with candidates from the Hudson Valley to Rochester picking up enough wins to attain the required 32-vote majority. Republican George Amedore defeated Democratic state Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik). The outcome was a dramatic reversal in a rematch of the state’s tightest race two years ago. As of midnight Wednesday, Amedore led Tkaczyk by approximately 11,000 votes in the five-county, 46th Senate District. Elsewhere in the region, incumbent Republican senators Kathleen A. Marchione of Halfmoon and Hugh Farley of Niskayuna were re-elected over their Democratic challengers. Arthur Cusano is reporting in the Register Star state Assembly member Didi Barrett claimed victory late Tues. (Nov. 4) over her Republican challenger Mike Kelsey, but the close race may come down to absentee ballots. The latest results available had Barrett ahead by approximately 20 votes, with 99 percent of districts reporting. Kelsey acknowledged the race was close, but did not concede defeat. In other races, voters returned incumbents U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Assembly member Steve McLaughlin to office by wide margins. Read the full story in the Register Star.

The Register Star is reporting the Hudson Opera House has received a $1.5 million loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Community Facility Loan program. The funds will be used to renovate the historic theater building, constructed in 1855. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand announced the loan, Mon., Nov. 3. New York's junior senator urged USDA Secretary Tom Vilsacke in May to approve the funding. Gillibrand said, "This federal investment will help preserve the building and bring the opera house back to life, so that New Yorkers can enjoy all that the theater provides, for generations to come.” The acquired funds will be used to continue renovations of the building's second floor performance hall and backstage area, to create a 300-seat theater. Chris Gibson, who is running against Democrat Sean Eldridge. Tkaczyk was in Catskill, rallying the troops at the Greene County Democrats headquaters on Main St. Gibson and Amedore traveled together, arriving in the afternoon at the Village Diner in Saugerties, and walking along Main St. talking to voters. Last election, in 2012, Tkaczyk beat Amedore by 18 votes in a vote that took several months to count. Clearly, these candidates were taking each and every vote very seriously. The emerald ash borer has been found in Westchester and Broome counties by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, Cornell University and the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, according to a statement released by DEC Commission Joe Martens, Mon., Nov. 3. The beetle was found in DEC traps just north of the city of Peekskill and southeast of the city of Binghamton. The Peekskill find was just outside the current state and federal emerald ash borer quarantine line. New York now has 24 counties where the invasive species has been confirmed; however, most of the infested areas are small and localized. According to the DEC, New York has more than 900 million ash trees, representing approximately seven percent of all trees in the state. All are at risk from the beetle. Urban and suburban communities face particular risks, as ash is a common street and park tree. The green ash, in particular, has been widely planted as an ornamental tree in yards. The emerald ash borer is a small but destructive beetle that infests and kills North American ash trees. Damage from beetle is caused by larvae, which feed just below the tree's bark. Further information is available at the DEC website, DEC [dot] NY [dot] gov.

John Mason provides a rundown of the local propositions on the ballots in four towns in Columbia Co. on Election Day. Mason writes in the Register Star, three of those propositions are put forward by libraries seeking funding from town residents. In Ancram, voters will decide whether to create a separate tax line for the Roeliff Jansen Community Library. In Kinderhook and Stockport, voters will decide whether to add approximately $6,000 to the Kinderhook Memorial Library operating budget. In Greenport voters will decide whether to abolish the post of highway superintendent and reassign those duties to the newly created position of Public Works commissioner. Three statewide propositions will appear on the ballot Tues., as well. Voters will have the opportunity to vote on redistricting, allowing the Legislature to go paperless and borrowing $2 billion for schools. The Times Union Editorial Board announced this weekend its endorsements in the general election. In weighing in on the choices, the board wrote that while it considered experience, positions and proposals, a candidate's position on the Women's Equality Act weighed significantly in the paper's decision-making. The Hearst-owned daily affixed its seal of approval to more Democrats than Republicansl. Among the recommendations, the paper chose Democratic challenger Brian Howard over the Republican incumbent state Sen. Kathy Marchione in the 43rd Senate District, calling Howard "the more capable choice." In the hotly contested 46th Senate District, the paper picked incumbent Sen. Cecilia Tkzacyk (KAT-chik) over Republican George Amedore. Calling Tkzacyk a "firm voice for upstate, particularly on agricultural matters," the editors wrote she has "earned a second term." Republican incumbent Steve McLaughlin was one of two Republicans endorsed by the editors. The Daily Freeman reports that county offices in Greene, Columbia, Ulster, and Dutchess counties are closed for election day Tue., Nov. 4. Polls are open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and results are posted in the hours after the polls close. WGXC has an hour-long live edition of the "WGXC Evening News" Tue., Nov. 4 at 6 p.m., and there will be more election results on Dan Seward's "Battlefied Earth" program at 9:30 p.m., and after midnight on WGXC 90.7-FM.

Brittany Horn in the Albany Times-Union reports that a state law went into effect Nov. 1, with new and inexperienced drivers facing penalties such as a license suspension of 120 days for the first offense of texting while driving and a year-long loss of license for a second offense that takes place within six months of a driver getting his or her license back, according to a news release from Gov. Arthur Cusano reported in the Register Star Hudson Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr. lifted the ban on dogs and bicycles in city cemeteries, Fri., Oct. 31. Dogs are now allowed in the cemeteries on the pavement or roadways only, and they must be kept on a leash at all times. Bicycles are now permitted in the cemeteries, as well. “I am confident that with these changes, the commissioner [of Public Works James Folz] has found a compromise to which all city residents, and all those who frequent the cemetery can live by,” Hallenbeck wrote in a press release.

Casey Seiler writes at Capitol Confidential, according to a Siena Research Institute poll conducted in the 46th Senate District, challenger George Amedore leads incumbent Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk (KAT-chik) by nine points (54 to 43 percent), an outcome virtually unchanged from Siena's Oct. 6 survey. Only three percent of responders were undecided. A Siena spokesman said Amedore continues to have the support of 80 percent of Republicans, but his support among Democrats has grown to 25 percent. Among women, Amedore holds a 9 percent lead.

The Daily Freeman is reporting Hunter town justice William M. Simon is once again running unopposed for another four-year term on the bench. Simon has served as town justice since 2002, and has run unopposed in the past three elections. He is a Republican. Simon is an attorney with the Tannersville law firm of Simon and Schneider. He also serves as the village of Tannersville’s attorney.

Diane Valden is reporting in the Columbia Paper on Copake Town Board candidates Lenny Barham and Terry Sullivan. They are facing off to fill the seat vacated by David Paciencia (PAH-see-en-see-ah) in July. Paciencia served just six months of his four-year term leaving a balance of three years to be filled by a successor. Barham is the Democrat and serves as the chair of the town's Board of Ethics. He is a retired teacher and administrator with New York City Board of Education. Sullivan is an enrolled Republican, running on the GOP, Independence and Conservative party lines. She is licensed in speech-language pathology and audiology, and owns and operates Sullivan Speech and Hearing, PC. She also serves as a consultant to various medical and rehabilitation centers in the region.

Melanie Lekocevic reported in The Daily Mail local developer Aaron Flach has received approval from the Coxsackie Village Planning Board to build a senior housing project at 132 Mansion St. Construction is expected to begin once Greene Co. officials okay the plan. Flach intends to build 10, 1,200-square-foot apartments in three buildings. The development would be an unsubsidized, independent living facility. Rent would run around $1,000-a month. Flach purchased the property, site of the former True Value Hardware store, in 2011.
