Jillian Nadiak reported in The Daily Mail four local women were recognized and honored at Columbia-Greene Community College, Fri., Nov. 13, for their volunteer service. Nicolette Sacco-Brown and Jill Salerno, of Columbia County, and Rebecca Heath Shields and Robin Smith, of Greene County, were celebrated at the annual President’s Community Breakfast. The event was attended by approximately 100 people, including U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, state Assembly members Pete Lopez and Steve McLaughlin, and Hudson Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr. College President James Campion began his tenure at the college in 2000 and soon after established the annual breakfast to honor community members known for their community service.

The Oneonta Daily Star reported an environmental group is suing the state Department of Environmental Conservation about the proposed Belleayre (Bell-AIR) Resort in Highmount, Ulster Co. The Catskill Heritage Alliance filed a lawsuit this past week to require a hearing on the proposed resort, saying that the state agency "failed to consider adequately" certain aspects of the project in its review. The DEC approved in July, developer Crossroads Ventures’ plan to construct two hotels, a spa, golf course and various lodging units on 739 acres that lie in both Ulster and Delaware counties. In the legal filing, the Alliance argues the resort as proposed would lead to flooding, traffic, air pollution and density, and pointed to the inadequacies of the project's plans for storm water management, as well.

The Mid-Hudson News Network reported the state Department of Public Service has initiated an investigation into recent disruptions in the 911 emergency telephone systems in the region. More than 400,000 Verizon and Frontier Communications customers were affected in portions of Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, Putnam and Westchester counties. The probe will evaluate why back-up systems designed to ensure continued service operations failed, and what improvements might be needed. The investigation is expected to take two months.

Debby Mayer reported in the Columbia Paper voters in Greenport will go to the polls Tue., Nov. 17, to cast their ballots on a referendum to approve a bond resolution of up to $2.7 million for the construction of a new fire station. The new house would be located on the site of Becraft Pumper Company Number 2, on County Route 14. Town residents have been advised the bond will result in a one-time tax increase of 37 cents to 42 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. A new Becraft station would measure 6,800 square feet, more than twice the size of the existing firehouse. It will have three bays for trucks and equipment, a community room and two offices. The polls will be open 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday at the Greenport Community Center. Rick Karlin reported at Capitol Confidential Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo Thu., Nov. 12, vetoed a proposal to build a liquefied natural gas terminal 19 miles off of Jones Beach in southern Nassau County. The project, dubbed Port Ambrose, would have allowed tankers to haul liquified natural gas to a terminal where it would have then been pumped into metro-area gas pipelines. In announcing the decision, Cuomo said, “The risk is not worth the reward….Superstorm Sandy taught us how quickly things can go from bad to worse when major infrastructure fails – and the potential for disaster with this project during extreme weather or amid other security risks is simply unacceptable.”

Michael Ryan in The Daily Mail reports that on Nov. 12 a Greene County grand jury re-indicted Windham town supervisor Stacy Post on four felony counts for allegedly making secret video and audio recordings in the Town Hall. Post was indicted for a second time for eavesdropping, official misconduct, and possession of eavesdropping devices. The first indictments were dismissed by Columbia County Supreme Court Judge Richard Mott in October as “defective.” After being arrested in January, Post rejected a plea bargain that would have reduced those charges to disorderly conduct and resigning as supervisor. Instead, she ran for re-election and lost. Post served as Windham police chief for four years before being elected supervisor. Robert Pelham takes over as Windham supervisor from Post on Jan. 1, 2016. Read the full story in the Windham Journal.

The Troy Record reports that Hudson Valley musicians are rallying to Jason Martin's cause, after he was beaten in Troy in October. Martin who often played with Hudson's Bunnybrains and has toured with Lady Gaga, needed surgery after he was jumped by five men who got $15 from him. Martin often performs as Power Animal System, and often dressed as a lady with a wolf head. An online fundraising effort exceeded its goal of $3,500, and a benefit concert will be held Nov. 14 at the Takk House, at 55 Third St. in Troy, with Hudson's Bunnybrains and C Lavendar among the performers. Proceeds go toward covering medical and dental co-pays and expenses, medications, pharmaceutical equipment, food, utilities, and lost wages during his recovery. Jim Planck is reporting in The Daily Mail Democrat Doreen Davis of Palenville has defeated incumbent Catskill supervisor, Republican Joseph Leggio, also of Palenville, by eight votes, according to the Greene County Board of Elections. The results were announced Thu., Nov. 12, after the absentee and affidavit ballots were counted. Davis expressed her appreciation to supporters, and all voters, as well. She said, “My sincere thanks...it’s a privilege to be asked to serve.” Davis also extended her thanks to Leggio for the tone of the campaign. She said, “It was a very respectful campaign, so I thank Joe for the type of campaign he ran, and also for the years that he served the Town of Catskill.” The results of the absentee ballot count for in the Greene County Legislature District 1 race were also reported Thursday, and the election night results remained unchanged. The four candidates chosen to represent Catskill at the county level were Republicans Matthew Luvera, Linda Overbaugh and Michael Bulich and Democrat Kevin Lennon. The Republican party will hold a 9 to 5 majority when the new term begins January 1. Republicans now hold an 8 to 6 majority. Read both stories in The Daily Mail.

John Mason is reporting in the Register-Star ash trees in the city of Hudson could soon be in trouble if they are not watched closely, say members of the city’s Conservation Advisory Council. The city lies in a quarantine zone for the emerald ash borer. The ash borer has killed tens of millions of ash trees in the United States since it was first discovered near Detroit in 2002. Hudson and Greenport are on the northeastern edge of a quarantine area for the pest. Germantown, Clermont and part of Livingston are within the infested core area, which includes Catskill and parts of Athens, Hunter and beyond. Conservation Advisory Council member Holly Gardner said the council now has plans to put together an emerald ash borer task force. The task force will monitor the public ash trees, and identify other ash trees on private property. An information session is planned for the spring and the group is also seeking funding for treatments to kill the infestation, should that occur. Gardner said people buying or selling firewood need to be cautious about not providing free transportation for the pest. Gardner said, “If it’s not heat-treated, be careful where you’re moving it.” Anyone in Hudson interested in being emerald ash borer monitors are asked to contact the Conservation Advisory Council through City Hall.
