In the late 1970s three multi-instrumental musicians came together to form the group Codona. They were Collin Walcott who studied sitar with Ravi Shankar, and tabla with Alla Rakha, Don Cherry the jazz trumpet player who started out with Ornette Coleman and the Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos who played with such musicians as Weather report, Gato Barbieri, Pat Metheny and others.
