Using an electrosmog high frequency receiver, Roos captures sounds produced by mobile phones, wireless phones, wifi, microwaves, and other electronic devices (between 800 MHz - 2.5 GHz). Important to Roos’electrosmog is that wifi operates on the same frequency as a microwave oven (2.4GHz), and when modulated into audible frequencies, wifi sounds like pops and clicks and a microwave creates a deep drone.

The inclusion of the Fisk Generating Station as a site-specific element in electrosmog speaks to the emergence of site-specific sound and radio art. In acknowledging the spaces that Roos creates within, he uses them as an aural palette of sorts. Our everyday lives consist of mixing and creating sound collage and microscopic sound sculptures — largely because sound is constantly entering and vibrating our bodies. With the addition of wifi and other inaudible high frequencies, we are also being confronted by another world of frequencies.

Will the electrosmog created by our North American obsession with wireless devices be looked at in the same way we turn our noses at burning coal and the coal smog that once filled our cities to create power? Roos’ electrosmog explores what the electrosmog equivalent would be to the shutting down of the Fisk Generating Station. Conversely, the work ponders whether we are, in fact, heading down a road that sees an increase in coal power plants and a disregard for all forms of smog. Would this be a place where inaudible radiating pops and clicks of information float in and out of fog as thick as pea soup?

Bio:

Kristen Roos is a Vancouver-based artist whose practice includes site-specific installations, sound design for dance, and performance. His exploration of underground, low frequency, and electromechanical sounds is a prominent feature of his work. The muted sounds and tactile vibrations implicitly suggest a primal association, mingling with the deep droning noises of modernization and labor, the spectral, resonant shimmer of the past, present, and future. He has exhibited in artist-run centers and festivals across Canada, and performed in new music venues in Austria and the Netherlands. This week: "In this year 2015 is the 300 year anniversary of the birth of German Baroque Composer Georg Friedrich Händel, born 23 February, 1685 in Halle (Saale), Germany. And it is the 100 year anniversary of the death of Russian Pianist and Composer, Alexander Nikolajewitsch Skrjabin and also, on March 8 – celebrated around the world every year – International Woman`s Day. With this in mind, two members of a folk, pop Indie band, an actress and classical pianist student talk about „Art“, Music, the World and their place in it. Improv Breakfast is a conversation in three parts which developed naturally through an organic interview (process). If it can be said that: Art is where the line is always searching, then somewhere that line will bend – there will be overlap (of ideas, expressions). The interviewees are not in the same room at the same time, but they sometimes end up at the same place. The subjects are at once the interviewed and interviewer. The three sensory and tactile stories unfold and come together gradually and grow organically to somehow form a new story. Each of the interviewed say they forgot they were in an interview. The show now airs on many radio stations around the world and streams and podcasts on its own website. "Framework" sees itself as an outlet for this ever-growing and developing community, a folk-tool in a new folk movement, a community driven exchange point for creators and listeners alike. The show's goal is to present not only the extremely diverse sound environments of our world, but also the extremely diverse work that is being produced by the artists who choose to use these environments as their sonic sources. We hope to ask this question: is "field-recording" a style or a genre, or is it in fact as uncontrollable and undefinable an instrument or tool as any, that may be interpreted, manipulated, and appropriated by anyone with a microphone and an idea? These works are its definition and not vice versa.

"Framework" broadcasts two distinct alternating formats: a regular edition, constructed and mixed by its presenter from contributions submitted by listeners and members of the field-recording community, and framework:afield, a guest-curated series produced by artists from all corners of the globe and based on their own themes, concepts, or recordings. We see radio and the ability to broadcast as an important tool for any self-sustaining community, a way for it to communicate with its own members and with the world at large, a simultaneous staking of territory and invitation in.
