Important to Roos\u2019electrosmog is that wifi operates on the same frequency as a microwave oven (2.4GHz), and when modulated into audible frequencies, wifi sounds like pops and clicks and a microwave creates a deep drone.\n\nThe inclusion of the Fisk Generating Station as a site-specific element in electrosmog speaks to the emergence of site-specific sound and radio art. In acknowledging the spaces that Roos creates within, he uses them as an aural palette of sorts. Our everyday lives consist of mixing and creating sound collage and microscopic sound sculptures \u2014 largely because sound is constantly entering and vibrating our bodies. With the addition of wifi and other inaudible high frequencies, we are also being confronted by another world of frequencies.\n\nWill the electrosmog created by our North American obsession with wireless devices be looked at in the same way we turn our noses at burning coal and the coal smog that once filled our cities to create power? Roos\u2019 electrosmog explores what the electrosmog equivalent would be to the shutting down of the Fisk Generating Station. Conversely, the work ponders whether we are, in fact, heading down a road that sees an increase in coal power plants and a disregard for all forms of smog. Would this be a place where inaudible radiating pops and clicks of information float in and out of fog as thick as pea soup?\n\n<\/div>
Bio:\n\nKristen Roos is a Vancouver-based artist whose practice includes site-specific installations, sound design for dance, and performance. His exploration of underground, low frequency, and electromechanical sounds is a prominent feature of his work. The muted sounds and tactile vibrations implicitly suggest a primal association, mingling with the deep droning noises of modernization and labor, the spectral, resonant shimmer of the past, present, and future. He has exhibited in artist-run centers and festivals across Canada, and performed in new music venues in Austria and the Netherlands. Each and every week, one of the partners will provide the network program, commissioned and produced especially for this purpose: being broadcast by all the partners and made available online.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Some things have to be said about all those partners. They are radio stations, of the independent, non-commercial, community, cultural species. They all speak different languages, and this should create interesting problems. Although initially they were all European radio stations this has changed over time, and Radia has become not only larger but also more diverse: 22 partners in 14 countries and growing all the time.<\/p>\r\n
